When to enter the place of i’tikaf (seclusion).
‘Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to perform i'tikaf, he would enter the place of i'tikaf after offering the morning prayer. And once, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered for his tent to be set up (in the mosque). It was set up, and he had intended to perform i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. So, Mother of the Believers Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) asked for a tent to be set up for herself, and it was set up for her as well. Then, when the other Mothers of the Believers asked, their tents were also set up. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered the Fajr prayer, he saw all the tents and said,“What good intention have these people made? (There is a scent of showing off in this.)”So, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered for his tent to be taken down, and it was taken down, and he abandoned i'tikaf in Ramadan until he later performed i'tikaf in the first ten days of Shawwal.

I’tikaf in the first and middle ten days.
‘Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that’ the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed i’tikaf in the first ten days of Ramadan, then he performed i’tikaf in the middle ten days in a Turkish tent, at the door of which a mat was hanging. (At the beginning of the last ten days) (Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the mat with his blessed hand and moved it to one corner of the tent, and he put his head out and addressed the people, so the people came close to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I performed i’tikaf in the first ten days seeking (Laylat al-Qadr), then I performed i’tikaf in the middle ten days, then someone (an angel) came to me and it was revealed to me that this night (Laylat al-Qadr) is in the last ten nights. Whoever among you wishes to perform i’tikaf should do so. So the people performed i’tikaf with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was shown that it is in the odd nights, and I saw myself prostrating in the morning of that night in water and mud. Then, when the morning of the twenty-first night came, and that night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept praying until morning, and it rained, so the mosque leaked and I saw water and mud. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out after praying the morning prayer, there was a mark of water and mud on his forehead and the tip of his nose, and that was the twenty-first night of the last ten nights of Ramadan.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan until he passed away. After him, his noble wives (may Allah be pleased with them) also observed i'tikaf.

Striving in worship during the last ten nights.
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the last ten days of Ramadan would come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stay awake the whole night, wake up his family, strive hard (in worship), and tighten his waist belt (i.e., prepare himself with determination).

Seeking Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
`Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and if one shows weakness or is unable, then do not be negligent in the last seven nights.

Laylat al-Qadr may be on the 21st night.
The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this chapter has already been mentioned (see Hadith: 632).

Laylat al-Qadr may be on the 23rd night.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unais (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Laylat al-Qadr was shown to me, then it was made to be forgotten by me. And I saw (in a dream) that in the morning of that night I was prostrating in water and mud." The narrator said that on the twenty-third night, it rained upon us and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led us in prayer. When he turned after the prayer (i.e., the morning prayer), there were traces of water and mud on his forehead and nose. And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unais (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that the twenty-third night was Laylat al-Qadr.

Seek Laylat al-Qadr on the 21st, 23rd, or 25th night.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed i'tikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan, during which he used to seek Laylat al-Qadr before its knowledge was given to him. When the middle ten days passed, he (peace be upon him) ordered the tent to be taken down, so it was taken down. Then it was made known to him that it (Laylat al-Qadr) is in the last ten days, so he (peace be upon him) ordered the tent to be set up again, so it was set up again. Then he (peace be upon him) came to the companions and said: O people! The knowledge of Laylat al-Qadr was given to me, and I came out to inform you, but two men came arguing, with whom was Satan, so (its exact determination) was made to be forgotten by me. Now seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan; seek it on the ninth, seventh, and fifth nights (from the end). The narrator says: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), you know better than us about these numbers. He said: Yes! We are more entitled to know about it than you. The narrator says: I said, which nights are meant by the ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When the twenty-first night passes, after which comes the twenty-second night, that is what is meant by the ninth. And when the twenty-third passes, the one after it is meant by the seventh. And when the twenty-fifth night passes, the one after it is meant by the fifth.

Laylat al-Qadr may be on the 27th night.
Sayyiduna Zirr bin Hubaish رضي الله عنه says: I asked Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b رضي الله عنه, "Your brother Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضي الله عنهما says that whoever stays awake throughout the year will attain Laylat al-Qadr." He replied, "May Allah have mercy on him. By saying this, his intention was that people should not rely on just one night (but should always remain engaged in worship). Otherwise, he knew well that it is in Ramadan, in the last ten nights, and it is the twenty-seventh night." Then, without saying 'InshaAllah', he swore an oath and said, "It is the twenty-seventh night." I asked him, "O Abu Mundhir! On what basis do you make this claim?" He said, "Because of a sign or indication which the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم informed us of, that on its morning, when the sun rises, it has no rays (but this sign appears after the night has ended)."
