Sanctity of blood, wealth, and honor.
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Indeed, time has turned back to its original state as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year consists of twelve months, of which four are sacred months (meaning, fighting in them is not permissible). Three of them are consecutive: Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab, the month of (the tribe of) Mudar, which is between Jumada al-Thani and Sha'ban. Then he said: What month is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we thought he would give it another name. Then he said: Is it not the month of Dhu al-Hijjah? We said: Yes, it is the month of Dhu al-Hijjah. He said: What city is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Again, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we thought he would give it another name. Then he said: Is it not (al-Balad) Makkah? We said: Yes, it is. He said: What day is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we thought he would give it another name. Then he said: Is it not the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr)? We said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, it is the Day of Sacrifice. He said: Your lives, your wealth (the narrator says: I think he also said), and your honor (dignity) are as sacred to you as this day is sacred in this city, in this month. (Just as the sanctity of this day, city, and month is beyond doubt, so too is the life, honor, and wealth of a Muslim sacred, and it is not permissible to take them without a valid Shari'ah reason.) Soon you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not turn back to disbelief or misguidance after me, striking the necks of one another (i.e., do not fight among yourselves and kill each other. This was the last and very great and excellent advice of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Alas, Muslims acted upon it for a short time, then fell into calamity and destroyed their hereafter). Whoever is present (in this gathering) should convey this message to the absent (those who are not present). For it may be that the one to whom this message is conveyed will remember it better than the one who heard it. Then he said: Behold, have I conveyed the message of Allah?

What makes a Muslim’s blood lawful?
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not permissible to kill a Muslim who testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that I am His Messenger, except for one of three reasons: 1. He commits adultery after being married; or 2. Life for life (i.e., he kills someone); or 3. He leaves his religion and separates from the community of Muslims.

Ruling on one who apostatizes, kills, and fights.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that eight men from the tribe of ‘Ukl came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. Then the climate of (Madina) did not suit them and their bodies became ill. They complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he said,“Will you not go with our shepherd to the camels and drink their milk and urine?”They said,“Alright.”Then they went out and drank the milk and urine of the she-camels and became well. Then they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels. This news reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he sent a group after them. They were captured and brought back, and by his order, their hands and feet were cut off and their eyes were gouged out with a needle, then they were thrown out in the sun until they died.

Sin of one who starts the practice of killing.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any blood (murder) is shed unjustly, a portion of its burden (i.e., sin) falls upon the first son of Adam (Qabil), because he was the first to initiate the way of murder.

Whoever kills himself will be punished similarly in Hell.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever kills himself with an iron weapon, that weapon will be in his hand and he will keep striking his belly with it in the Fire of Hell forever and ever. And whoever drinks poison and kills himself, he will keep drinking that poison in the Fire of Hell forever and ever. And whoever throws himself down from a mountain and kills himself, he will keep falling down in the Fire of Hell forever and ever, and this will always be his state (that he will fall from a high place to a lower one).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the polytheists confronted each other in battle, and they fought. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned towards his army and those people turned towards their army, there was a man among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (his name was Qazman and he was among the hypocrites) who would not leave any single disbeliever but would chase him and kill him with his sword (that is, whoever he confronted among the disbelievers, he would kill him). So the companions said that no one has benefited us today as much as this man has. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“He is of the people of Hell.”One of us said,“I will stay with him (and keep watch over him to see what deed he does that leads him to Hell, because outwardly he is doing very excellent deeds).”Then that person went out with him, and wherever he stopped, this person also stopped, and wherever he ran, this person also ran with him. Eventually, that man (i.e., Qazman) was severely wounded and (unable to bear the pain of his wounds) wanted to die quickly, so he placed the hilt of his sword on the ground and its point between his two breasts, then pressed down on it and killed himself. Then the person (who had gone with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said,“I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“What happened?”The man said,“The person whom you just declared to be of the people of Hell and the people were surprised at it, I said I would keep watch over him for you. Then I went out in search of him, he was severely wounded, and to die quickly he placed the hilt of his sword on the ground and its point between his two breasts, then pressed down on it until he killed himself.”Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“A man may do the deeds of the people of Paradise in the eyes of the people, but he is of the people of Hell, and a man may do the deeds of the people of Hell in the eyes of the people, but he (in the end) is of the people of Paradise.”

Whoever kills with a stone, is killed likewise.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a slave girl was found with her head crushed between two stones. She was asked, "Who did this to you? So-and-so? So-and-so?" until the name of a Jew was mentioned, and she indicated with her head (in affirmation). That Jew was caught and he confessed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his head be crushed with a stone as well.

If someone bites another’s hand and loses teeth.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man bit another's hand (with his teeth). The other pulled his hand away, and the front teeth of the one who bit fell out. (Then the one whose teeth had fallen out) complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What do you want? Do you want me to order him to put his hand in your mouth and then you chew it as a camel chews? Well, you too put your hand in his mouth so he may chew it, then you pull your hand away (i.e., if you wish, retribution can be carried out in this way: you also put your hand in his mouth and then pull it away; either his teeth will break or your hand will be injured)."

Qisas for wounds unless compensation is accepted.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the sister of Sayyiduna Rabi’ (may Allah be pleased with him), Umm Haritha (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the paternal aunt of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), injured a man (she broke his tooth). Then they brought this dispute (case) to the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that qisas (retaliation) will be taken, qisas will be taken. Umm Rabi’ said,“O Messenger of Allah! Will qisas be taken from so-and-so (woman)?”(meaning Umm Haritha).“By Allah, qisas will not be taken from her.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Subhan Allah, O Umm Rabi’! The Book of Allah orders qisas.”Umm Rabi’ said,“No, by Allah, qisas will never be taken from her.”Umm Rabi’ kept saying this until the family of the one whose tooth was broken agreed to accept blood money. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“There are some servants of Allah that if they swear an oath by Allah, relying on Him, Allah fulfills their oath (i.e., makes their oath come true).”
