مختصر صحيح مسلم
Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Prophet’s migration and his signs.
Abu Ishaq says: I heard Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) say that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came to my father’s (Azib’s) house and bought a saddle from him. He said,“Tell your son to carry this saddle with me to my house.”My father told me to carry the saddle, so I picked it up, and my father also went out with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr to receive its price. My father asked,“O Abu Bakr! What did you do that night when you went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?”(i.e., when you set out from Makkah to Madinah for migration). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“We traveled all night until morning came, and it was exactly midday when there was no one traveling on the road. We saw a large rock ahead, whose shadow was on the ground and where the sunlight had not reached. We stopped there. I went to the rock and leveled a place with my hand so that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) could rest in its shade. Then I spread a cloak (sheet) there and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Please sleep, and I will keep watch around you for any enemy (to see if anyone is searching for us).’ Then I saw a shepherd coming with his goats toward the same rock with the same intention as ours (i.e., to rest in its shade). I met him and asked, ‘O boy, whose slave are you?’ He replied, ‘I am the slave of a man from the people of Madinah (i.e., Makkah).’ I asked, ‘Are your goats milk-giving?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Will you give us some milk?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ Then he brought a goat, and I said, ‘Clean its udder from hair, dirt, and dust so that these things do not get into the milk.’ (The narrator said:) I saw Bara’ bin Azib striking and dusting one hand over the other. Anyway, the boy milked a little milk into a wooden bowl, and I had a bucket with me in which there was water for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to drink and perform ablution. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I disliked waking him from sleep, but I saw that he had woken up by himself. I poured water over the milk until it became cool, then I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Please drink this milk.’ He drank until I was pleased. Then he said, ‘Is it not time to depart?’ I said, ‘It is.’ Then we set out after the sun had declined, and Suraqah bin Malik pursued us (and he was a disbeliever at that time), and we were on hard ground. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! The disbelievers have caught up with us.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Do not worry, Allah is with us.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against Suraqah, and his horse sank into the ground up to its belly (even though the ground was hard). He said, ‘I know that you both have supplicated against me. Now I swear by Allah that I will turn away anyone who comes searching for you. Pray for me (that Allah relieves me from this punishment).’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed to Allah, and he was released and returned. Whenever a disbeliever met him, he would say, ‘I have already searched this way.’ In short, whoever met him, Suraqah would turn him away. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Suraqah fulfilled his promise.
About the Battle of Badr.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) received news of the arrival of Abu Sufyan’s caravan, he consulted (the companions). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke, but again the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not address him. Finally, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (the chief of the Ansar) stood up and said,“O Messenger of Allah! Are you asking us (i.e., the Ansar)? By Allah, in Whose hand is my soul, if you command us to drive our horses into the sea, we will surely do so, and if you command us to drive our horses to Bark al-Ghamad (a place very far from Makkah), we will surely do so. (Meaning, we are entirely obedient to your command, even though we did not make such a pledge to you. How admirable is the devotion of the Ansar!)”Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the people, and they set out until they camped at Badr. There they met the water carriers of the Quraysh. Among them was a black slave of Banu Hajjaj. The companions captured him and began to ask him about Abu Sufyan and his companions. He said,“I do not know about Abu Sufyan, but Abu Jahl, Utbah, Shaybah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf are present.”When he said this, they beat him, and when he said,“Alright, alright, I will tell you about Abu Sufyan,”they let him go. Then they would ask him again, and he would say the same:“I do not know about Abu Sufyan, but Abu Jahl, Utbah, Shaybah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf are among the people.”Then they would beat him, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing and praying. When he saw this, he finished his prayer and said,“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, when he tells you the truth, you beat him, and when he lies, you let him go.”(This was a miracle.) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“This is the place where such-and-such disbeliever will die,”and he placed his hand on the ground to indicate.“And this is the place where such-and-such will fall.”The narrator said that wherever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand, there was not the slightest difference, and every disbeliever fell exactly at that spot. (This was another miracle.)
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent Basisa (the name of a person) as a spy to bring news of Abu Sufyan’s caravan. He returned, and at that time there was no one in my house except the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The narrator said that I do not remember which wife of the Prophet Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned, then he narrated the hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out and said,“We have a task, so whoever has a mount present should ride with us.”Hearing this, some people began to ask permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to go to their mounts, which were on the heights of Madinah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“No, only those whose mounts are present should go.”Eventually, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out with his companions until he reached Badr before the polytheists, and the polytheists also arrived. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“None of you should advance towards anything until I am ahead of him.”Then, when the polytheists drew near, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Rise towards the Paradise whose width is equal to the heavens and the earth.”Umair bin Hammam Ansari said,“O Messenger of Allah! Is the width of Paradise equal to the heavens and the earth?”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Yes!”He said,“Wow, Glory be to Allah.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Why do you say that?”He replied,“Nothing, O Messenger of Allah! I said it in the hope that I too will be among the people of Paradise.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Then you are of Paradise.”Hearing this, he took out a few dates from his quiver and began to eat them, then said,“If I live until I finish my dates, it will be a long life.”He threw away the remaining dates and fought the disbelievers until he was martyred.
Angelic help, ransom of captives, and booty’s lawfulness at Badr.
`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the polytheists, and they were one thousand, while the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were three hundred and nineteen. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the polytheists and turned his face towards the Qiblah, spread both his hands, and began to supplicate to his Lord, calling out in prayer (from this hadith it is derived that turning towards the Qiblah and spreading the hands in supplication is recommended): O Allah! Fulfill what You have promised me, O Allah! Grant me what You have promised me, O Allah! If You destroy this group of Muslims, then there will be none left on earth to worship You. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to supplicate with his hands raised, until his blessed cloak fell from his shoulders. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and placed the cloak on his shoulders, then embraced him from behind and said: O Noble Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This much supplication is sufficient for you; now Allah will fulfill the promise He made to you. Then Allah revealed this verse: "When you were calling upon your Lord for help, and He answered you, 'I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, following one another.'" (Al-Anfal: 9) Then Allah helped the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the angels. Abu Zumail (the narrator of the hadith) said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me that on that day, a Muslim was chasing a disbeliever who was ahead of him, when suddenly a sound of a whip was heard from above, and someone was saying, "Go forth, Haizum!" (Haizum was the name of the horse of that angel). Then it was seen that the disbeliever fell flat in front of the Muslim. When the Muslim saw him, there was a mark on his nose and his mouth was split open, as if struck by a whip, and it had turned green (due to the whip). Then the Ansari Muslim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the incident, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You speak the truth; this was help that came from the third heaven. In the end, the Muslims killed seventy disbelievers that day and captured seventy. Abu Zumail said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that when the captives were brought, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): What is your opinion regarding these captives? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! They are our own people and relatives; I think you should take some ransom from them, which will give the Muslims strength to face the disbelievers, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)! What is your opinion? He said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! My opinion is not the same as Abu Bakr's. My opinion is that you hand them over to us so that we may kill them. Give Aqil to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) so that he may strike his neck, and give me my so-and-so relative so that I may strike his neck, for these people are the "leaders" of disbelief. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) preferred the opinion of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and did not prefer my opinion. And when the next day came and I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (I saw that) he and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) were both sitting and weeping. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me why you and your companion are weeping. If I find reason to weep, I will weep, otherwise I will make myself weep because of your weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am weeping because the punishment that was shown to me for your companions taking ransom was brought so close to me, closer than this tree (there was a tree near the Messenger of Allah, and he pointed towards it). Then Allah revealed this verse: "It is not for a Prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land." (Al-Anfal: 67-69).
Prophet’s conversation with the dead disbelievers at Badr.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left the slain of Badr lying as they were for three days. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to them and called out to them, saying: "O Abu Jahl bin Hisham, O Umayyah bin Khalaf, O Utbah bin Rabi'ah, and O Shaybah bin Rabi'ah! Did you find the promise of Allah to be true? For I have found the promise of my Lord to be true." When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying this, he submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! How can they hear and when will they answer? They have become dead and decayed." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you do not hear what I am saying any better than they do. However, they cannot reply." Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), they were dragged and thrown into the well of Badr. (That is, only the Prophet's words were being heard by them.)
Account of the Battle of Uhud.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the day of Uhud (when the disbelievers prevailed and the Muslims were overpowered) was left alone; seven men from the Ansar and two from the Quraysh remained with him. The disbelievers attacked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he said, "Who will repel them from us? He will have Paradise or my companionship in Paradise." One of the Ansar advanced and fought until he was martyred. (The disbelievers) attacked again, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Who will repel them from us? He will have Paradise or he will be my companion in Paradise." Another Ansari advanced and fought until he was martyred. This continued until all seven Ansar were martyred. (SubhanAllah, how great was the devotion and loyalty of the Ansar! From here, one should understand the rank and status of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.) Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "We did not do justice to our companions (or our companions did not do justice to us)." (In the first case, it would mean that justice was not done, i.e., the Quraysh remained seated while the Ansar were martyred; the Quraysh should also have gone forth. In the second case, it would mean that our companions who fled to save their lives did not do justice, as their brothers were martyred and they were concerned with saving themselves.)
Prophet’s injury on the day of Uhud.
It is narrated from Abu Hazim that he heard from Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was asked about the wounding of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Uhud, he said that the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wounded, his tooth was broken, and his helmet was broken on his head (so imagine how much pain his head must have suffered). Then the Prophet’s daughter, Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her), was washing the blood, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was pouring water over it. When Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her) saw that the blood was flowing even more with water, she burned a piece of mat and filled the wound with its ashes, then the blood stopped.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had his tooth broken and was wounded on his head on the day of Uhud. The Prophet (peace be upon him) kept wiping away the blood and was saying, "How can a people prosper who have wounded their Prophet and broken his tooth, while he was calling them towards Allah, the Exalted?" At that time, this verse was revealed: "You have no authority in the matter; whether He turns to them in mercy or punishes them; for they are indeed wrongdoers." (Aal-e-Imran: 128).
Jibreel and Mikaeel fighting at Uhud for the Prophet.
The conqueror of Persia, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), says: "On the day of Uhud, I saw two men on the right and left side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who were wearing white clothes (and they were fighting fiercely on his behalf). Before and after that, I did not see them. They were Jibreel and Mikaeel (peace be upon them). (Allah Almighty honored the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with these angels, and from this it is known that the fighting of the angels was not exclusive to Badr.)"
Allah’s wrath upon those killed by the Prophet.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The anger of Allah is very severe upon those who do such a thing, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would point towards his tooth, and said: The anger of Allah is also very severe upon the person whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kills in the way of Allah (i.e., in jihad, because that wretched person must have intended to kill the Prophet, and this does not refer to those whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) killed as a legal punishment or in retribution).
