Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Slaughtering well and sharpening the knife.
Sidna Shaddad bin Aws رضي الله عنه says that I have remembered two things from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Allah Almighty has prescribed excellence in everything. So when you kill, kill in the best manner, and when you slaughter, slaughter in the best manner. And it is necessary that whoever among you wants to slaughter should sharpen his knife and give comfort to his animal (and it is preferable that he should not sharpen the knife in front of the animal, nor slaughter one animal in front of another, nor drag the animal before slaughtering it).
Ruling on slaughtering with blood-letting tools and prohibition of teeth and nails.
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said,“O Messenger of Allah! Tomorrow we will be fighting the enemy and we do not have knives with us?”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Hurry or be clever; whatever causes blood to flow and Allah’s name is mentioned over it, eat of it, except for teeth and nails.”And I will tell you the reason: the tooth is bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians. The narrator said: We received camels and goats as spoils of war, then one of the camels ran wild, so a man shot it with an arrow and it stopped. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Some of these camels become wild and run away like wild animals. So when any animal becomes like this, do the same with it.”(i.e., target it from a distance with an arrow).
