Explanation of Allah’s saying:“When the hypocrites come to you...”
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which the people suffered greatly (from hunger and thirst). Abdullah bin Ubayy (the hypocrite) said to his fellow hypocrites, "Do not give anything to those who are with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until they disperse from him." Zuhayr said: This is the recitation of the one who recited "man hawlahu" (and this is the well-known recitation, and the rare recitation is "man hawlahu," meaning: until those who are around him disperse). And Abdullah bin Ubayy the hypocrite said, "If we return to Madinah, surely the honorable one (i.e., the accursed one considered himself honorable) will expel the lowly one" (i.e., the accursed one considered the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the lowly one). When I heard this, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, so he sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and asked him about it. He swore that he had not said so and claimed that Zayd had lied to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This caused me great distress, until Allah proved me truthful and the Surah (When the hypocrites come to you) was revealed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called them to seek forgiveness, but they turned their heads away (i.e., they did not come), and Allah Almighty said about them: "As if they were pieces of wood propped up against a wall." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Those people appeared outwardly to be good and virtuous.

Hypocrites refusing to ask the Prophet (ﷺ) to seek forgiveness for them.
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who among you will climb the pass of Marar so that his sins may be forgiven like the sins of the Children of Israel were forgiven?" Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The first to climb that pass were our horses, meaning the people of the tribe of Khazraj, then the people followed." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The forgiveness has been granted to each one of you except the owner of the red camel." We went to that man and said: "Come, so that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) may supplicate for your forgiveness." He replied: "By Allah! If I find my lost thing, it is dearer to me than the supplication of your companion." Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That man was searching for his lost thing (he was a hypocrite, that is why the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that his forgiveness was not granted, and this was a miracle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as he turned out exactly as the Prophet had said)."

Mention and signs of hypocrites.
Qais bin ‘Abad says: I asked Sayyiduna ‘Ammar bin Yasir (and ‘Ammar bin Yasir was on the side of Sayyiduna ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, in the Battle of Siffin),“The fighting you did (on the side of Sayyiduna ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him), was this your own opinion or did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything to you about it? If it was an opinion, then opinions can be correct or incorrect.”So Sayyiduna ‘Ammar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say anything to us that he did not say to the general people.”And Sayyiduna ‘Ammar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:“Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Indeed, in my Ummah (the narrator of the hadith, Shu’bah, says: I think he said that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah narrated to me, and another narrator, Ghundar, says he did not say the words“Hudhayfah narrated to me”), there will be twelve hypocrites who will neither enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance until a camel enters the eye of a needle. Eight of them—a single boil (abscess) will be enough for you (i.e., it will be the cause of their death), that is, a lamp of fire will appear on their shoulders and will come out breaking through their chests.’ (That is, in that boil there will be a burning coal as if a lamp has been placed in it. May Allah protect the Muslims. Ameen.)

Hypocrites at Laylat al-‘Aqaba and their number.
Sayyiduna Abu Tufail says that there was a dispute between a man from the people of Aqabah and Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him), as happens among people. He said, "I ask you by Allah, how many were the Companions of Aqabah?" (By this is meant those hypocrites who, during the expedition of Tabuk, gathered in a mountain pass to harm the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم , but Allah protected him from their evil.) The people said to Hudhaifah, "When he is asking, then tell him." He said, "We were informed (by the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) that they were fourteen men. If you are also among them, then they were fifteen. And I swear that twelve of them were enemies of Allah and His Messenger صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم in this world and the Hereafter, and the remaining three made this excuse (when they were questioned and reproached): 'We did not even hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم (who said not to come by the way of Aqabah), nor were we aware of the intention of this group.' And (at that time) the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was in a rocky land. Then he moved on and said, '(At the next stop) there is little water, so no one should go to the water before me.' When the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم arrived there, some (hypocrites) had already reached there, so the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم cursed them that day."

A hypocrite is like a sheep between two flocks.
Narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: The example of a hypocrite is like that of a goat wandering between two flocks, sometimes joining one flock and sometimes the other.

A strong wind blows at the death of a hypocrite.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from a journey. When he approached near Madinah, such a strong wind blew that the rider was about to be buried in the ground. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that this wind has blown because of the death of a hypocrite. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Madinah, one of the great hypocrites among the hypocrites had died. (This was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.)

Severe punishment for hypocrites on the Day of Judgment.
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We visited a man with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who was suffering from fever. I placed my hand on him and said,“By Allah! I have never seen anyone as hot as this person today.”(Due to the severity of the fever, his body was extremely hot.) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Shall I not tell you about a person who will be even hotter than this on the Day of Resurrection? They are these two riders who are turning their backs and going away.”(This was about two men who were among the companions at that time. He said this because they were hypocrites, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was aware of their hypocrisy.)

Throwing out the body of a hypocrite or apostate and leaving him.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was a man from our tribe, Banu Najjar, who had recited Surah Al-Baqarah and Al-Imran, and he used to write for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he ran away and joined the People of the Book. They welcomed him (i.e., they honored him) and said, "This was Muhammad's (peace and blessings be upon him) scribe." They were pleased to have found him. Then, after a few days, Allah Almighty destroyed him. They dug a grave for him and buried him. In the morning, they saw that his body was lying outside. Then they dug a pit and buried him again. In the morning, they saw that his body was lying outside. Then they dug a pit and buried him again. In the morning, they saw that the earth had thrown his body out. In the end, they left him lying as he was.
