Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij and Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate that Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayyisah bin Mas’ud both came to Khaybar and separated among the date-palm groves. Abdullah bin Sahl was killed, so Abdur Rahman bin Sahl and Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, the sons of Mas’ud, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke about their murdered companion. Abdur Rahman, who was the youngest, began to speak, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:“Let the elder speak.”Yahya said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant that the elder should get up and speak. So they spoke about their murdered companion, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Can fifty men among you swear an oath and thus become entitled to the blood money for your murdered man?”They said: O Messenger of Allah! This is a matter which we did not witness (so how can we swear an oath)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Then the Jews will swear fifty oaths (that they did not kill him) and will be acquitted.”They said: They are disbelieving people (what value is there in their oaths)? Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood money himself. Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I once entered their camel enclosure, and one of the she-camels (from the blood money) kicked me.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me about a tree whose characteristic is like that of a Muslim. It is a tree that always bears fruit by the command of its Lord, and it does not shed its leaves." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that it occurred to me that it is the date-palm tree, but due to the presence and silence of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the gathering, I considered it inappropriate to speak. When both of those elders did not give any answer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is the date-palm tree." When I went out with my father, I said: Father! It had occurred to me that it was the date-palm tree. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What prevented you from telling it? If you had told it, it would have been more pleasing to me than such and such wealth. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Nothing prevented me except that you and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) were both silent, so I did not consider it appropriate to speak.

It is narrated from Hakim bin Qais bin Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) that his father, Sayyiduna Qais bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him), while advising his sons at the time of his death, said: Fear Allah, and appoint as your leader the eldest among you. Indeed, any people who appoint their elder as their leader, they truly establish their father’s rightful successor, and when they appoint the younger as their leader, this causes all of them to be disgraced among their peers. And be mindful of earning wealth and increasing it through lawful means, for this is a matter of honor for a noble person, and through it he becomes independent of a lowly person. And do not ask people (for anything), for this is the last resort for earning wealth (that when a person is completely compelled, then he asks someone), and when I die, do not wail over me, for wailing was not done over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And after my death, bury me in such a place that Bakar bin Wa’il does not know of it, for in the days of ignorance I used to attack them unawares.
