It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The strong and brave one is not the one who overcomes others; rather, the strong one is the one who controls himself at the time of anger."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sulaiman bin Surad (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that two men abused each other in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so one of them became so angry that his face turned red. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at him and said: "Indeed, I know a word that if this person says it, his anger will cool down (that word is) «أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ» ." So a man got up and went to that person and said: Do you know what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You should recite «أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ» ." That man said: Do you think I am mad?

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sulaiman bin Surad (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and two men were insulting each other. One of them's face turned red and his veins swelled. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, I know a word, if this person were to say it, all his anger would go away." So the people told him that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil." He said: Am I mad?

It is narrated from Ubaid Kindi, may Allah have mercy on him, that I heard Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, saying to Ibn Kawwa: Do you know what the people of old used to say? (He said:) When you love someone, do not go to extremes, for it is possible that the same person may become your enemy tomorrow. And when you have enmity with someone, do not go to extremes in your enmity either. It is possible that the same person may become your friend one day.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Let not your love make you insane, and let not your enmity incite you to destruction. I asked: How is that? He said: That when you love, you love like a child, madly, considering everything to be for him alone; and when you bear enmity, you wish that the one you hate be destroyed altogether.
