It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he divorced his wife while she was in her menstrual period. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to take her back and keep her with him until she becomes pure, then her menstrual period comes again and then she becomes pure again. Then, if he wishes, he may keep her with him, and if he wishes, he may divorce her before having intercourse with her. This is the waiting period (iddah) which Allah the Exalted has commanded that women should be divorced in." (That is, this is the period which Allah the Exalted has commanded in «فطلقوهن لعدتهن» .)

Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the wife of Rifa’ah al-Qurazi came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), at that time Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa’id bin al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) was at the door seeking permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). That woman said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I was married to Rifa’ah, then he divorced me with three divorces. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Do you want to go back to Rifa’ah? No, not until (the second husband) tastes your sweetness and you taste his sweetness”(this is an allusion to intercourse). Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him) called out to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Do you not see this woman, how she is speaking loudly in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?

‘Amrah bint ‘Abd al-Rahman reported that Sayyidah Habibah bint Sahl was married to Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyidah Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to marry her, and she was his neighbor ( «انفرد به الدارمي» ). Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) struck her, so she came to the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the darkness of the morning. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, he saw the shadow (silhouette) of a person and said,“Who is it?”She replied,“I am Habibah bint Sahl.”He said,“What is the matter?”She said,“I do not want Thabit (i.e., I cannot stay with him).”Then when Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said,“Take back your property from her and let her go.”Sayyidah Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Whatever he gave me is all with me.”So Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) took all his property back and let her go, and Sayyidah Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) went and stayed with her family (i.e., she obtained khul‘ from her husband).
