It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer, then turned towards us and gave such an admonition that people’s eyes began to weep and hearts began to tremble. We said,“O Messenger of Allah! This seems like a farewell admonition, so what do you enjoin upon us?”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“I am leaving you upon a clear Shari‘ah, whose night and day are alike. Whoever deviates from it after me will be destroyed. And whoever among you lives (after me) will soon see many differences, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs, and make it binding upon yourselves. And obey the leader, even if he is an Abyssinian slave. Hold on to these matters firmly, and beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance.”
