Chapter 98: Permissibility of ablution from large bowls and dishes
Hadith Number: 127
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and I observed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to see how he performed prayer at night. So (during the night) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated, then washed his face and both hands, then went to sleep. Then (after resting for a while) he got up, untied the water-skin, and poured water into a large bowl or tub. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution between two extremes (neither very thorough nor very light), and began to pray standing. So I got up and performed ablution as well, then I came and stood on his left side, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took me by the ear and made me stand on his right side.
