Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stayed in Madinah Munawwarah for nine years and did not perform Hajj. Then the announcement was made that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would perform Hajj that year. Therefore, countless people came to Madinah Munawwarah. Everyone wished to perform Hajj following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out from Madinah Munawwarah and reached near the mosque of Dhul-Hulaifah. He offered prayer in that mosque, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out for the journey, and countless people were with him. Some were on foot and some were riding their mounts. Everyone wished to follow the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When he ascended to the place of Bida’, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to recite the Talbiyah. And we had made the intention only for Hajj. We had no knowledge of ‘Umrah (we did not even consider performing ‘Umrah during the months of Hajj to be permissible). I looked to my right, left, in front, and behind, and as far as the eye could see, there were only people—some on foot and some riding. Everyone wished to perform Hajj following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
