Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: He gave his wife one divorce while she was in her menstrual period. Then he intended to give her the remaining two divorces during the coming periods of purity. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know about this, he said: "O Ibn Umar! Allah Almighty has not commanded you to give divorce in this manner. You have acted against the Sunnah. The Sunnah is that you should let her become pure first, then give one divorce in each period of purity." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided me, so I took her back. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When she becomes pure, then you may divorce her or keep her with you (i.e., do not divorce her)." I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What do you say, if I give her three divorces, will it be permissible for me to take her back?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "No, (in that case) she will become separated from you and (giving divorce in this manner) will be a sin."
