The Book of Hajj
باب التمتع والإقران والإفراد بالحج، وفسخ الحج لمن لم يكن معه هدي:
(34) Chapter.What is said regarding Hajj-at-Tamattu, Hajj-al-Qiran and Hajj-al-Ifrad. And whoever has not brought the Hady with him, he should finish the Ihram of Hajj, and make it as Umra, (and then assume another Ihram for Hajj form Makkah, etc.).
Hadith Number: 1563
حدثنا محمد بن بشار، حدثنا غندر، حدثنا شعبة، عن الحكم، عن علي بن حسين، عن مروان بن الحكم، قال:" شهدت عثمان، وعليا رضي الله عنهما، وعثمان ينهى عن المتعة وان يجمع بينهما، فلما راى علي اهل بهما لبيك بعمرة وحجة، قال: ما كنت لادع سنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لقول احد".
Narrated Marwan bin Al-Hakam: I saw `Uthman and `Ali. `Uthman used to forbid people to perform Hajj-at-Tamattu and Hajj-al- Qiran (Hajj and `Umra together), and when `Ali saw (this act of `Uthman), he assumed Ihram for Hajj and `Umra together saying, "Lubbaik for `Umra and Hajj," and said, "I will not leave the tradition of the Prophet on the saying of somebody."

Hadith Number: 1569
حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، حدثنا حجاج بن محمد الاعور، عن شعبة، عن عمرو بن مرة، عن سعيد بن المسيب، قال:" اختلف علي وعثمان رضي الله عنهما وهما بعسفان في المتعة، فقال علي: ما تريد إلا ان تنهى عن امر فعله النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فلما راى ذلك علي اهل بهما جميعا".
Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab: `Ali and `Uthman differed regarding Hajj-at-Tamattu while they were at 'Usfan (a familiar place near Mecca). `Ali said, "I see you want to forbid people to do a thing that the Prophet did?" When `Ali saw that, he assumed Ihram for both Hajj and `Umra.
