The Book of Holding Fast To The Qur’An and The Sunna
باب ما يكره من كثرة السؤال وتكلف ما لا يعنيه:
(3) Chapter. What is disliked of asking too many questions and of troubling oneself with what does not concern one.
Hadith Number: 7297
حدثنا محمد بن عبيد بن ميمون، حدثنا عيسى بن يونس، عن الاعمش، عن إبراهيم، عن علقمة، عن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه، قال: كنت مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في حرث بالمدينة" وهو يتوكا على عسيب، فمر بنفر من اليهود، فقال بعضهم: سلوه عن الروح، وقال بعضهم: لا تسالوه لا يسمعكم ما تكرهون، فقاموا إليه، فقالوا: يا ابا القاسم، حدثنا عن الروح، فقام ساعة ينظر، فعرفت انه يوحى إليه، فتاخرت عنه حتى صعد الوحي، ثم قال: ويسالونك عن الروح قل الروح من امر ربي سورة الإسراء آية 85".
Narrated Ibn Masud: I was with the Prophet at one of the farms of Medina while he was leaning on a date palm leaf-stalk. He passed by a group of Jews and some of them said to the other, Ask him (the Prophet) about the spirit. Some others said, "Do not ask him, lest he should tell you what you dislike" But they went up to him and said, "O Abal Qasim! Inform us bout the spirit." The Prophet stood up for a while, waiting. I realized that he was being Divinely Inspired, so I kept away from him till the inspiration was over. Then the Prophet said, "(O Muhammad) they ask you regarding the spirit, Say: The spirit its knowledge is with my Lord (i.e., nobody has its knowledge except Allah)" (17.85) (This is a miracle of the Qur'an that all the scientists up till now do not know about the spirit, i.e, how life comes to a body and how it goes away at its death) (See Hadith No. 245, Vol. 6)

Hadith Number: 125
حدثنا قيس بن حفص، قال: حدثنا عبد الواحد، قال: حدثنا الاعمش سليمان، عن إبراهيم، عن علقمة، عن عبد الله، قال:" بينا انا امشي مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في خرب المدينة وهو يتوكا على عسيب معه، فمر بنفر من اليهود، فقال بعضهم لبعض: سلوه عن الروح، وقال بعضهم: لا تسالوه، لا يجيء فيه بشيء تكرهونه، فقال بعضهم: لنسالنه، فقام رجل منهم، فقال: يا ابا القاسم، ما الروح؟ فسكت، فقلت: إنه يوحى إليه، فقمت، فلما انجلى عنه، قال: ويسالونك عن الروح قل الروح من امر ربي وما اوتيتم من العلم إلا قليلا سورة الإسراء آية 85"، قال الاعمش: هكذا في قراءتنا.
Narrated `Abdullah: While I was going with the Prophet through the ruins of Medina and he was reclining on a date-palm leaf stalk, some Jews passed by. Some of them said to the others: Ask him (the Prophet) about the spirit. Some of them said that they should not ask him that question as he might give a reply which would displease them. But some of them insisted on asking, and so one of them stood up and asked, "O Abul-Qasim! What is the spirit?" The Prophet remained quiet. I thought he was being inspired Divinely. So I stayed till that state of the Prophet (while being inspired) was over. The Prophet then said, "And they ask you (O Muhammad) concerning the spirit --Say: The spirit -- its knowledge is with my Lord. And of knowledge you (mankind) have been given only a little)." (17.85)

Hadith Number: 4721
حدثنا عمر بن حفص بن غياث، حدثنا ابي، حدثنا الاعمش، قال: حدثني إبراهيم، عن علقمة، عن عبد الله رضي الله عنه، قال:" بينا انا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في حرث وهو متكئ على عسيب، إذ مر اليهود، فقال بعضهم لبعض: سلوه عن الروح؟ فقال: ما رايكم إليه؟ وقال بعضهم: لا يستقبلكم بشيء تكرهونه، فقالوا سلوه؟ فسالوه عن الروح، فامسك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فلم يرد عليهم شيئا، فعلمت انه يوحى إليه، فقمت مقامي، فلما نزل الوحي، قال: ويسالونك عن الروح قل الروح من امر ربي وما اوتيتم من العلم إلا قليلا سورة الإسراء آية 85".
Narrated `Abdullah: While I was in the company of the Prophet on a farm and he was reclining on a palm leave stalk, some Jews passed by. Some of them said to the others. "Ask him (the Prophet about the spirit." Some of them said, "What urges you to ask him about it" Others said, "(Don't) lest he should give you a reply which you dislike." But they said, "Ask him." So they asked him about the Spirit. The Prophet kept quiet and did not give them any answer. I knew that he was being divinely inspired so I stayed at my place. When the divine inspiration had been revealed, the Prophet said. "They ask you (O, Muhammad) concerning the Spirit, Say: "The spirit," its knowledge is with my Lord; and of knowledge you (mankind) have been given only a Little." (17.85)

Hadith Number: 7456
حدثنا يحيى، حدثنا وكيع، عن الاعمش، عن إبراهيم، عن علقمة، عن عبد الله، قال:" كنت امشي مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في حرث بالمدينة وهو متكئ على عسيب، فمر بقوم من اليهود، فقال بعضهم لبعض: سلوه عن الروح؟ وقال بعضهم: لا تسالوه عن الروح، فسالوه، فقام متوكئا على العسيب وانا خلفه، فظننت انه يوحى إليه، فقال: ويسالونك عن الروح قل الروح من امر ربي وما اوتيتم من العلم إلا قليلا سورة الإسراء آية 85، فقال بعضهم لبعض: قد قلنا لكم لا تسالوه".
Narrated `Abdullah: While I was walking with Allah's Apostle in one of the fields of Medina and he was walking leaning on a stick, he passed a group of Jews. Some of them said to the others, "Ask him (the Prophet) about the spirit." Others said, "Do not ask him." But they asked him and he stood leaning on the stick and I was standing behind him and I thought that he was being divinely inspired. Then he said, "They ask you concerning the spirit say: The spirit, its knowledge is with My Lord. And of knowledge you (O men!) have been given only a little." ...(17.85) On that some of the Jews said to the others, "Didn't we tell you not to ask?"

حدثنا موسى بن إسماعيل، عن عبد الواحد، عن الاعمش، عن إبراهيم، عن علقمة، عن ابن مسعود، قال:" بينا انا امشي مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في بعض حرث المدينة وهو يتوكا على عسيب معه، فمررنا على نفر من اليهود، فقال بعضهم لبعض: سلوه عن الروح، فقال بعضهم: لا تسالوه ان يجيء فيه بشيء تكرهونه، فقال بعضهم: لنسالنه، فقام إليه رجل منهم، فقال: يا ابا القاسم ما الروح؟، فسكت عنه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فعلمت انه يوحى إليه، فقال: ويسالونك عن الروح قل الروح من امر ربي وما اوتيتم من العلم إلا قليلا سورة الإسراء آية 85، قال الاعمش هكذا في قراءتنا.
Narrated Ibn Mas`ud: While I was walking in company with the Prophet in one of the fields of Medina, the Prophet was reclining on a palm leave stalk which he carried with him. We passed by a group of Jews. Some of them said to the others, "Ask him about the spirit." The others said, "Do not ask him, lest he would say something that you hate." Some of them said, "We will ask him." So a man from among them stood up and said, 'O Abal-Qasim! What is the spirit?" The Prophet kept quiet and I knew that he was being divinely inspired. Then he said: "They ask you concerning the Spirit, Say: The Spirit; its knowledge is with my Lord. And of knowledge you (mankind) have been given only a little." (17.85)
