It is narrated from Abu al-Zubair (Muhammad bin Tadris) al-Makki, who reports from Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufail Amir bin Wathila, that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that in the year of the Battle of Tabuk, he set out (for jihad) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would combine the Zuhr and Asr prayers, and the Maghrib and Isha prayers. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the prayer, then came out (from the tent) and led both the Zuhr and Asr prayers together, then went inside. Later, he came out again and led both the Maghrib and Isha prayers together, then said: "All of you, if Allah wills, will reach the spring of Tabuk tomorrow, and you will not reach it before the sun has risen. So, whoever among you reaches the spring, let him not touch its water before I arrive." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we arrived there, two men had reached before us, and the spring was trickling with a little water, as if it were a thin strap. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: "Did you touch any of the water of this spring?" They replied: Yes! So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked them and said what Allah willed him to say. Then the people scooped up a little water from the spring with their hands until it was collected in a vessel. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his face and hands with it, then poured that water back into the spring. The spring then began to flow with abundant water. The people drank and gave others to drink. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Mu'adh! If you live long, you will soon see that this area will be filled with gardens."

And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was in a hurry during travel, he would combine the Maghrib and Isha prayers.
