Shahr bin Hawshab says that I asked Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): O Mother of the Believers! When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with you, which supplication did he recite most frequently? She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this supplication most often: "O Turner of the hearts! Keep my heart firm upon Your religion." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the reason for this supplication, he said: "The heart of every person is between two fingers from among the fingers of Allah, He keeps firm whomever He wills (upon guidance) and lets go astray whomever He wills."

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A Bedouin came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me something of the best. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his hand and said:“Say like this: Allah is Pure, all praise is for Allah, there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Allah is the Greatest.”The Bedouin counted these four things on his fingers and left, but after thinking, he came back. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said,“The poor Bedouin has started thinking.”He came back and said: O Messenger of Allah! Allah is Pure, all praise is for Allah, Allah alone is worthy of worship, and Allah is the Greatest. All these (praising) words are for Allah, what is there for me? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:“Bedouin! When you say «سبحان الله» , Allah, the Exalted, will say: «صدقت» (You have spoken the truth). When you say «الحمد لله» , Allah, the Exalted, will say: «صدقت» . When you say «لا اله الا الله» , Allah, the Exalted, will say: «صدقت» . When you say «اللہ اکبر» , Allah, the Exalted, will say: «صدقت» . And when you say «اللهم اغفرلى» ‘O Allah! Forgive me,’ Allah, the Exalted, will say: I have forgiven you. When you say «اللهم ارحمنى» ‘O Allah! Have mercy on me,’ Allah, the Exalted, will say: I have had mercy on you. And when you say «اللهم ارزقني» ‘O Allah! Provide for me,’ Allah, the Exalted, will say: I have decided to provide for you.”The Bedouin counted these seven words on his hand and left.

Abu Malik Ashja'i narrates from his father Sayyiduna Tariq bin Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! When I ask my Lord, what should I say? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say like this: O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, and provide for me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his fingers except for the thumb. (And said:) "These words will gather for you your world and your Hereafter."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me this supplication: "O Allah! I ask You for every good, whether it comes soon or later, and whether I know of it or not, and I seek refuge with You from every evil, whether it comes soon or later, and whether I know of it or not. O Allah! I ask You for every good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and I seek refuge with You from every evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge with You. O Allah! I ask You for Paradise and for every word and deed that brings one closer to it, and I seek refuge with You from the Fire and from every word and deed that brings one closer to it, and I ask You that every decree You make concerning me, make it good for me."

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I say the same words as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Allah! I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from old age and the punishment of the grave. O Allah! Grant my soul piety and purify it, for You are the best to purify it. You are its Guardian and Lord. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not humble itself, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: We used to count that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this supplication one hundred times in a single gathering: "O my Lord!
Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said on the pulpit: "O Allah! There is none who can withhold what You give, and there is none who can give what You withhold, and the status of any person of high rank cannot benefit him against You. Allah, for whomever He intends good, grants him deep understanding of the religion." Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard these words from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on this pulpit.

It is narrated from Mus'ab that Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to command five things and would say that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them: "O Allah! I seek refuge in You from miserliness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice, I seek refuge in You from being returned to feeble old age, I seek refuge in You from worldly trials, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave." Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) has also mentioned "the trial of Dajjal" after the words "worldly trials."

I seek refuge in You from an evil neighbor, and from a wife who makes me old before old age, and from children who become my masters, and from wealth that becomes a torment for me, and from a deceitful friend whose eyes watch me while his heart is plotting against me, who suppresses every good deed of mine and spreads every evil."
