From the Book of Fasting
باب الشَّهَادَةِ عَلَى رُؤْيَةِ هِلاَلِ رَمَضَانَ:
Chapter: Testifying to Sighting the Ramadan Crescent
Hadith Number: 1729
حدثنا مروان بن محمد، عن عبد الله بن وهب، عن يحيى بن سالم، عن ابي بكر بن نافع، عن ابيه، عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنه، قال: تراءى الناس الهلال، فاخبرت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اني رايته،"فصام وامر الناس بالصيام".
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The people saw the moon (but it was not shown), I submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I have seen the moon, so he (peace be upon him) fasted and ordered the people to fast.

Hadith Number: 1730
حدثني عصمة بن الفضل، حدثنا حسين الجعفي، عن زائدة، عن سماك، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما، قال: جاء اعرابي إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقال: إني رايت الهلال. فقال:"اتشهد ان لا إله إلا الله، واني رسول الله؟"قال: نعم. قال:"يا بلال، ناد في الناس، فليصوموا غدا".
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have seen the moon. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Announce among the people that they should fast tomorrow."
