Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) was freed, her husband was a slave. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave her the choice, and someone gave Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) some meat as charity, so she put it in the pot. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) was given some other stew and was not given the meat. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Did I not see meat with you?" She said: Yes! But someone gave it to Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) as charity. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us." Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to seek help in her contract of emancipation, so she said to her: If your people wish, I will buy you and pay them the price in one lump sum. Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) went to her people and told them this. They said: That is fine, but your wala' (allegiance) will be for us. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Buy her and set her free, for wala' belongs to the one who sets free."
