Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from among the Bedouins came. He was wearing a green shawl cloak. He came and stood over the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Your companion has lowered the status of every horseman," or he said, "Your companion wants to lower the status of every horseman and raise the status of every shepherd." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered his cloak and held it and said: "Do I not see upon you the clothing of the foolish?" Then he said: "When the time of death of Allah's Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) came, he said to his son: I am making a will to you. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with «لا اله الا الله» , if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of the scale and «لا اله الا الله» was placed on the other side, it would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths became a ring, «لا اله الا الله وسبحان الله وبحمده» would break it (in one narration: it would be its gem). This is the prayer of everything and by it everything is provided sustenance. And I forbid you from shirk and arrogance." Upon this, I said or it was said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have recognized shirk, but what is arrogance?" Is arrogance that if one of us has a cloak, he wears it?" He said: "No." It was asked: "Is it that if one of us has very beautiful shoes and their laces are very beautiful?" He said: "No." It was asked: "Is it that one has a very good animal to ride upon?" He said: "No." It was asked: "That one has friends who sit with him respectfully?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not it either." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rejecting the truth and looking down upon people."

It is narrated from Haithem bin Malik Tai that he said: I heard Nu'man bin Bashir saying on the pulpit: Indeed, Satan has traps and snares, and indeed, the traps and snares of Satan are to rebel (become arrogant) over the blessings of Allah, to boast over Allah's gifts, to show superiority over the servants of Allah, and to follow one's desires instead of Allah.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Paradise and Hell argued with each other," and Sufyan also said: "Paradise and Hell quarreled. Hell said: 'The oppressors (and tyrants) will be gathered in me, and the arrogant will enter me.' And Paradise said: 'The weak will enter me, and the poor will enter me.' Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to Paradise: 'You are My mercy; I will show mercy through you to whom I wish.' And He said to Hell: 'You are My punishment; I will punish through you whom I wish. And I will fill both of you.'"

It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman that he said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were not people who would gather together, nor would they show themselves to be sick or weak (i.e., they did not pretend to be exhausted from worship). In their gatherings, they would recite poetry to each other and remember their days of ignorance. And when any one of them was called upon for something by the command of Allah, the pupils of his eyes would turn as if he were insane. (That is, they would become so anxious at Allah’s command that they would open their eyes wide and become fearful lest they fall short in acting upon it.)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was handsome. He said: "Love for being beautiful has been placed in my heart, and I have also been granted this (beauty) as you can see. I do not even like that anyone surpasses me in this (beauty), or he said, even by the strap of a shoe, or he said, by a red strap. Is this arrogance?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but arrogance is to reject the truth and to look down upon people."

Amr bin Shu’aib narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that the Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said:“On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be raised up like ants in the form of men. Humiliation will cover them from all sides. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Boulas. The blazing fire will overpower them, and they will be given the pus of the wounds of the inhabitants of Hell to drink (i.e., lahuqachlu).”
