Ubaidullah bin Abdullah says that once I went to the service of Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked, "Will you tell me something about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) at the time of his death?" She said, "Why not? When the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt heavy (with illness), he asked, 'Have the people performed the prayer?' We said, 'No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'Place water for me in a tub.' We did so. The Prophet (peace be upon him) bathed, and as he was about to stand up to go, he fainted. When he regained consciousness, he asked the same question, 'Have the people performed the prayer?' We gave the same answer as before, and this happened three times. Umm al-Mu'mineen Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the people were sitting in the mosque waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the Isha prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a message to Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was a very soft-hearted man, so he said, 'O Umar! You lead the people in prayer.' Umar said, 'You are more deserving of it.' Thus, during those days, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to lead the people in prayer. One day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt some relief in his illness, so at the time of the Zuhr prayer, he came out between two men, one of whom was Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). When Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), he began to step back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured to him not to step back and instructed the two men who were with him, so they seated the Prophet (peace be upon him) beside Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to stand and pray, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed while sitting. Ubaidullah says that after hearing this hadith, once I was at the place of Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). I said to him, 'Shall I present to you the hadith that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me regarding the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) at the time of his death?' He said, 'Certainly, narrate it.' So I narrated the entire hadith to him. He did not object to any part of it, but he did ask, 'Did Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) tell you the name of the man who was with Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'He was Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). May Allah's mercy be upon him.'"

Narrated to us by Abd al-Samad, and Muawiyah ibn Amr, they said: Narrated to us by Zaidah, narrated to us by Musa ibn Abi Aishah, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, he said: I entered upon Aisha, and I said to her: Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? She said: Yes, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, became seriously ill, and she mentioned the hadith, and said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured to him not to step back. Muawiyah said: He should not step back. And he said to them: "Seat me beside him." So they seated him beside him. She said: Then Abu Bakr began to lead the prayer while standing, following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the people were praying following the prayer of Abu Bakr, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sitting.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once she asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about "plague." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told her that it was a punishment which Allah used to send upon whomsoever He willed, but for the Muslims of this Ummah, Allah has made it a mercy. Now, whoever is afflicted with the disease of plague and remains in that city with the intention of reward, patiently enduring, and is certain that only that calamity will befall him which Allah has written for him, then he will receive the reward equal to that of a martyr.
