Sayyida Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When this verse was revealed: «تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ» "May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined." (111-Al-Masad:1), Umm Jamil bint Harb (who was the wife of Abu Jahl) came in great anger. She had a handful of stones in her hand and was saying: He is blameworthy, whom we have denied, and we have abandoned his religion, and we have disobeyed his matter. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present in the mosque at that time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting the Qur'an, and with him was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this woman, he said: O Messenger of Allah! This woman is coming, I fear that she will see you (and behave disrespectfully). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She will not be able to see me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to recite the Qur'an. He was seeking strength through it, just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: «وَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ جَعَلْنَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ حِجَابًا مَّسْتُورًا» "And when you recite the Qur'an, We place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a hidden barrier." (17-Al-Isra:45) That woman came and stopped by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); she did not see the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: O Abu Bakr! I have heard that your master has satirized us. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No! By the Lord of this house! He has not satirized you. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So the woman turned away, and as she was leaving, she was saying: The Quraysh know that I am the daughter of their chief. Here, a narrator named Walid has narrated these words in his narration, or perhaps another narrator has narrated: "So Umm Jamil was angry, she was covering herself with her cloak and circumambulating the House (Ka'bah), she said: May the one who is blamed be ruined." Then Umm Hakim, the daughter of Abdul Muttalib, said: "I am chaste, no accusation can be made against me. I am wise, I cannot be taught. We both women are cousins, and the Quraysh are well aware of this."
