Chapters on Voluntary Prayers while Sitting
(555) بَابُ ذِكْرِ الدَّلِيلِ عَلَى أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ يُكْثِرُ مِنَ التَّطَوُّعِ جَالِسًا وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهِ مَرَضٌ بَعْدَمَا أَسَنَّ وَحَطَمَهُ النَّاسُ
The chapter on the evidence that the Prophet increased voluntary prayers while sitting after old age, even without illness
Hadith Number: 1240
حدثنا سلم بن جنادة ، نا وكيع ، عن هشام بن عروة ، ح وحدثنا علي بن حجر السعدي ، اخبرنا جرير ، ح وحدثنا يوسف بن موسى ، نا جرير ، عن هشام بن عروة ، عن ابيه ، عن عائشة ، قالت: كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " يصلي وهو جالس بعدما دخل في السن، فإذا بقي من السورة ثلاثون او اربعون آية قام فقراها، ثم ركع" غير ان غير ان عليا ، قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " لا يقرا في شيء من صلاة الليل جالسا حتى إذا دخل في السن"
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after becoming old, used to pray while sitting. Then, when about thirty or forty verses of the surah remained, he (peace be upon him) would stand up and recite those verses, then go into bowing (ruku). Whereas in the narration of Ali bin Hujr (may Allah have mercy on him), the words are: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recite while sitting in the Tahajjud prayer until his age increased (then he would recite while sitting)."

حدثنا بندار ، نا يحيى ، حدثنا كهمس ، ح وحدثنا يعقوب بن إبراهيم ، حدثنا ابن علية ، عن الجريري ، كلاهما عن عبد الله بن شقيق ، قال: قلت لعائشة اكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " يصلي قاعدا؟ قالت: بعدما حطمه الناس" . وقال الدورقي: قالت: نعم، بعدما حطمه الناس
Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaqiq says that I asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray sitting?" She replied, "When the concerns of the people made the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) old, then after that he would pray (sitting)." The words of Janab Al-Dawraqi are that she said, "Yes, when the worries and concerns of the people made the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) old and weak, then after that (he would pray sitting)."
