Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to do seven things and forbade us from seven things. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to visit the sick, to follow funeral processions, to say "Yarhamuk Allah" in response to a sneezer, to accept the invitation of one who invites, to spread greetings of peace, to help the oppressed, and to fulfill the expiation after taking an oath. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from gold rings, from drinking in silver (utensils) or (he said) from drinking in silver vessels, from using Mayathir (a cushion of silk placed on saddles or mounts), from using Qassi (a cloth made in the outskirts of Egypt in which silk threads were also used), and from wearing silk, dibaj, and istabraq.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrated that we were present in the company of Hudhaifa bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked for water, so a Magian brought him water in a (silver cup). When he handed the cup to him, he threw the cup at him and said, "If I had not forbidden him repeatedly (not to give me anything in gold or silver vessels), I would not have treated him this way. But I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Do not wear silk or brocade, and do not drink from gold or silver vessels, nor eat from their plates, for these things are for them (the disbelievers) in this world and for us in the Hereafter."

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a striped (silk) garment being sold at the door of the Prophet’s Mosque. He said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! It would be better if you bought it and wore it on Fridays and when delegations come to meet you.”Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Only the one who has no share in the Hereafter can wear this.”Afterwards, some similar garments came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he gave one of them to Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You are giving me this garment to wear, even though you previously said something about the ‘Atard’ garments.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“I did not give it to you to wear yourself.”So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave it to his polytheist brother who lived in Makkah to wear.

Abu Uthman Nahdi narrates that a letter from Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us. At that time, we were in Azerbaijan with Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him). (The letter stated) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has prohibited the use of silk (for men) except for this much, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated its amount with the two fingers next to his thumb. Abu Uthman Nahdi narrated that it seemed to us that by this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant (the allowance of) making floral designs of silk (on garments, etc.).

Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was given a silk cloak as a gift. He wore it and performed prayer, but when he finished the prayer, he took it off very quickly, as if he felt discomfort wearing it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is not suitable for the pious.
