Salamah bin Sakhr Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I possessed such strength for intercourse with women that no one else had besides me. When the month of Ramadan came, I performed zihar with my wife for the whole month out of fear that I might have intercourse with her at night and continue until the day, unable to separate from her. One night, she was serving me when a part of her body became exposed, so I had intercourse with her. In the morning, I went to my people, narrated the entire incident to them, and said: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him about my situation. They said: By Allah! We will not do this; we fear that the Qur'an might be revealed about us or the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) might say something about us that would become a lasting disgrace for us, so you go alone and do as you see fit. So I set out and presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the whole incident to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me three times: Did you do this? I replied: I did this. Judge me according to Allah’s command; I will be patient and hope for reward. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Free a slave. I struck my neck with my hand and said: O Messenger of Allah! By the One Who has sent you with the truth! I do not own any neck except this one (my own). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then fast for two consecutive months. I said: O Messenger of Allah! It is because of fasting that I have fallen into this calamity. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then feed sixty needy people. I said: By the One Who has sent you with the truth! We spent the night hungry; we do not have food for the night. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go to the person in charge of the charity of Banu Zurayq. Ibn Yahya says: The correct word is "Areeq." And tell him to give you the charity, then from it, feed sixty needy people one wasq of dates on your behalf, and then spend the remaining dates on yourself and your family. I returned and said to my people: I found hardship and bad advice with you, whereas I found ease and blessing with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered that your charity be given to me, so give me the charity. He says: They gave me the charity.

Sulaiman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man from Banu Zuraiq, whose name was Salamah bin Sakhr, narrated the following in a shortened form: At the end, he says: Dates were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), which were about fifteen saa‘. He said: Give them as charity. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Should I give charity to those who are poorer than me and my family? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: You and your family eat them yourselves.

The wife of Sayyiduna Aws bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the brother of Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Khawlah bint Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: One day he (Aws bin Samit) came to me and, in anger, said something to me. I replied back, so he became upset and said: "You are to me like the back of my mother." Then he left and sat in the gathering of his people. Later, he returned (home) and wanted to have intercourse with me, but I refused. He pulled me, so I resisted and overpowered him, just as a woman overpowers a weak husband. I said: "By the One in Whose hand is Khawlah's soul, you cannot come near me until Allah decides between me and you." Then I went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to complain, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is your husband and also your cousin, so fear Allah and treat him kindly." I remained firm on my stance until the Qur'an was revealed: "Allah has indeed heard the statement of her who pleads with you concerning her husband..." (Al-Mujadilah: 1) (Allah has heard the statement of the woman who disputes with you concerning her husband) until the verse about expiation was completed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to free a slave." I said: "O Prophet of Allah! By Allah, he does not have a slave to free." He said: "Tell him to fast for two consecutive months." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! He is very old and unable to fast." He said: "Then feed sixty poor people." I said: "O Prophet of Allah! He does not have anything to feed them." He said: "We will give him a basket of dates as assistance." (The narrator says:) 'Iraq' refers to a large basket that holds thirty sa' of dates. I (Khawlah bint Tha'labah) said: "I will give one basket." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have done well, so let him give it as charity."

Abdullah bin Abbas narrates that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who had intercourse with his wife after declaring zihar upon her, and said: O Messenger of Allah! I had declared zihar upon my wife and had intercourse with her before giving the expiation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: May Allah have mercy on you, what made you do this? He said: I saw her anklets shining in the moonlight. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Do not go near her until you fulfill Allah’s command.
