Qasim bin Muhammad narrates that two grandmothers (either maternal or paternal, or both maternal and paternal) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) made the maternal grandmother an heir instead of the paternal grandmother. Then Abdur Rahman bin Sahal (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "He has participated in the Battle of Badr" (the narrator has mentioned these words once), and a man from Banu Haritha said: "O Sayyiduna Abu Bakr! O Caliph of the Messenger! You have given inheritance to her, that if she had died, the deceased woman would not have inherited from her." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) made both of them (the paternal and maternal grandmothers) heirs of the deceased woman.

Qasim bin Muhammad reports that a maternal grandmother and a paternal grandmother came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). One was a maternal grandmother and the other was a paternal grandmother. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the maternal grandmother be given inheritance, but did not give an order for the paternal grandmother. Then Abdur Rahman bin Sahal, who belonged to Banu Haritha, said to him: "O Caliph of the Messenger! You have ordered her to be given (inheritance), but if she were to die, the deceased would not inherit from her." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that both of them be given (inheritance). (The narrator says:) That is, he ordered that the sixth share be given.

Aqil bin Khalid narrates: Saeed bin Sulaiman has reported from his father, from his grandfather Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter his house. He was granted permission (and when he entered, he saw) his head was in the hand of a slave girl who was combing his hair. Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) moved his head away, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Let her comb it." Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Commander of the Faithful! You could have sent me a message, I would have come to you." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have come to you for a matter, I have come to ask about the ruling regarding the grandfather." So Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No! By Allah! What is your opinion about this?" So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is no revelation about this matter that we may add or subtract anything, this is a matter in which you have to give your opinion. If I find that your opinion matches mine, I will accept it, otherwise there will be no blame on you regarding this." But Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) did not accept this, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left in anger, and he said: "I came here so that you would solve my issue." After that, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came again to Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) at the same time as he had come the first day and continued to discuss this matter with him, so Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will write something for you about this." So he wrote it on a piece of saddlecloth and clarified it with an example: its example is like a tree that grows from a single trunk, from which a branch emerges, then from it another branch emerges, the trunk conveys water to that branch, if the first branch is cut, the water will go to the other branch, and if the second is cut, the water will go to the first branch. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took it and addressed the people and recited to them what was written on that piece, then said: "What Zaid has said about the grandfather, I implement it." The narrator states: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first grandfather with whom this situation occurred, he took all the wealth, that is, he took the wealth of his grandson and did not take the wealth of his granddaughters, after that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had that wealth distributed.
