The Book on Government
باب فَضْلِ الرَّمْيِ وَالْحَثِّ عَلَيْهِ وَذَمِّ مَنْ عَلِمَهُ ثُمَّ نَسِيَهُ:
Chapter: The virtue of Shooting and Encouragement to learn it, and criticism of the one who learns it and then forgets it

حدثنا هارون بن معروف ، اخبرنا ابن وهب ، اخبرني عمرو بن الحارث ، عن ابي علي ثمامة بن شفي ، انه سمع عقبة بن عامر ، يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو على المنبر، يقول: " واعدوا لهم ما استطعتم من قوة سورة الانفال آية 60، الا إن القوة الرمي، الا إن القوة الرمي، الا إن القوة الرمي ".
It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Amir who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) say-and he was delivering a sermon from the pulpit: Prepare to meet them with as much strength as you can afford. Beware, strength consists in archery. Beware, strength consists in archery. Beware, strength consists in archery.

حدثنا هارون بن معروف ، حدثنا ابن وهب ، اخبرني عمرو بن الحارث ، عن ابي علي ، عن عقبة بن عامر ، قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " ستفتح عليكم ارضون ويكفيكم الله، فلا يعجز احدكم ان يلهو باسهمه ".
It has been narrated on the authority of Uqba bin Amir who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) say: Lands shall be thrown open to you and Allah will suffice you (against your enemies), but none of you should give up playing with his arrows.

وحدثناه داود بن رشيد ، حدثنا الوليد ، عن بكر بن مضر ، عن عمرو بن الحارث ، عن ابي علي الهمداني ، قال: سمعت عقبة بن عامر ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بمثله.
This tradition has also been narrated on the same authority through another chain of transmitters.

حدثنا محمد بن رمح بن المهاجر ، اخبرنا الليث ، عن الحارث بن يعقوب ، عن عبد الرحمن بن شماسة ، ان فقيما اللخمي، قال لعقبة بن عامر: تختلف بين هذين الغرضين وانت كبير يشق عليك، قال عقبة : لولا كلام سمعته من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لم اعانيه، قال الحارث: فقلت لابن شماسة: وما ذاك؟، قال: إنه قال: " من علم الرمي ثم تركه فليس منا او قد عصى ".
It has been reported by 'Abdul Rahman bin Shamasa that Fuqaim al- Lakhmi said to Uqba bin Amir: You frequent between these two targets and you are an old man, so you will be finding it very hard. 'Uqba said: But for a thing I heard from the Holy Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) , I would not strain myself. Harith (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: I asked Ibn Shamasa: What was that? He said that he (the Holy Prophet) said: Who learnt archery and then gave it up is not from us. or he has been guilty of disobedience (to Allah's Apostle) ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) .
