It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set out from Makkah Mukarramah towards Hunayn in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). On the way, there was a lote tree belonging to the disbelievers; they used to stay near it and hang their weapons on it. It was called Dhat Anwat. The narrator says: When we passed by a lush and large lote tree, we said: O Messenger of Allah! Make for us a Dhat Anwat as they have a Dhat Anwat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul! You have said exactly what the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said:“Make for us a god just as they have gods.”Indeed, you are an ignorant people. These were the ways of Bani Israel; you will surely follow the ways of those before you, step by step.
