It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that one moon, then a second moon, and then a third moon would pass (that is, two or three months would go by) and no fire would be lit in any of the houses of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Urwah bin Zubair said: O aunt! Then what did you people subsist on? She said: On two black things, that is, dates and water.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: By the One Who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never saw a sieve, nor did he ever eat bread made from sifted flour; this remained the case from the time of his Prophethood until his passing. Urwah says: I asked,“Then how did you people eat (i.e., how did you eat barley bread without sifting)?”She said: We would simply blow on the flour and the husk would fly away.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: One night the family of Abu Bakr sent a goat's leg to us. I took it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cut it, or it was such that he (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and I cut it. We did not have the oil with which a lamp could be lit (if we had it, we would have prepared a curry). Such a month would pass over the family of Muhammad that they would neither bake any bread in it nor prepare any stew. The narrator Humaid says: When I narrated this hadith to Safwan bin Mahraz, he said: No, not just one month, but such a situation would occur for two consecutive months.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: O my nephew! The hair of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was more than a forelock and less than shoulder-length. O my nephew! By Allah, a whole month would pass for the family of Muhammad in such a way that there would be no occasion to light a fire in the house; sometimes a little meat (as a gift) would come, otherwise we would have to make do with water and dates. However, there were houses of Ansari people around us—may Allah reward them with goodness in this world and the Hereafter—they would send a goat with more milk to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) every day, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would drink its milk. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, there was half a (wasq) of barley in my cupboard; I kept eating from it, and when a long time had passed and it was not finishing, I measured it, and then it finished. I wish I had not measured it. By Allah, the bedding of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was made of leather and filled with palm fibers.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that three things of this world were beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): food, women, and fragrance. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) handed a piece of barley bread to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three days have passed, and now this is the first thing that has come to your father to eat."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have been made to fear in the way of Allah more than anyone else, and I have been harmed in the way of Allah more than anyone else. There have passed such periods of thirty consecutive days and nights for me and Bilal that we had nothing which any living being could eat, except for that which Bilal could conceal under his armpit.
