It is narrated from Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man said during a journey: "Who will slaughter a goat for us, and I will marry my first-born daughter to him?" A man slaughtered the goat. Then, when the girl was born, he made a claim. The matter was brought before Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: "The marriage has become binding, and the woman will be given a mahr equivalent to that of her peers, neither less nor more."

A similar narration is reported from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah have mercy on him).

Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "There were some people on a journey. One man said: 'Whoever slaughters a goat for us, I will marry my daughter to him, or the daughter who will be born to me.' A man slaughtered a goat. When the girl was born, the issue was referred to Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: 'You have become the owner of the woman, but this is not a dowry (mahr).'"

Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) went to visit the sick Sayyiduna Qudamah bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him). During this time, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) received the good news of the birth of a daughter. Sayyiduna Qudamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Marry this girl to me." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What will you do with a little girl while your condition is such?" Sayyiduna Qudamah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "If I remain alive, this daughter of Zubair will be my wife, and if I die, she will inherit from me." Thus, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) married her to Sayyiduna Qudamah (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him): "No one is permitted to marry without a dowry after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If someone gives even a whip as a dowry, the marriage will be valid."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said:“O Messenger of Allah! I have gifted myself to you.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked up at her, then lowered his gaze and bowed his head. A companion said:“O Messenger of Allah! If you have no need of this woman, then marry her to me.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Do you have anything (to give as a dowry)?”He said:“No.”The Prophet said:“Go and see if you can find anything.”He went and came back saying:“I found nothing.”The Prophet said:“Go, even if it is an iron ring.”He returned and said:“Not even that.”So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“What do you know from the Qur’an?”He mentioned a few surahs. The Prophet said:“I have married her to you in exchange for what you know of the Qur’an.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) married a woman with a surah of the Qur'an as her dowry and said: "This dowry will not be permissible for anyone after me."

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him): "Abdur Rahman bin Umm al-Hakam demanded inheritance from his wife, who was the daughter of Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him), during his illness. She refused, so Abdur Rahman married two other women. Abdul Malik bin Marwan declared this marriage permissible."

Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The marriage and buying and selling of a person who marries in the illness of death are permissible."

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "We consider marriage permissible even in the illness of death."
