It is narrated from Sulaiman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Uthman and Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them) refused to allow the wife of Nufay’ to return to him, who had given her two divorces.

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Divorce is in the hands of men and the waiting period (iddah) is the responsibility of women.

Hazrat Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Divorce is in the man's authority and 'iddah is obligatory upon the woman.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: A free man can give three divorces to a slave woman and her waiting period ('iddah) is two menstrual cycles; a slave can give two divorces to a free woman and her waiting period is three menstrual cycles. Thus, divorce is with the men and the waiting period is with the women.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The ruling of divorce and 'iddah pertains to women.

Hasan al-Basri and Ibn Sirin, may Allah have mercy on them, said: Divorce and waiting period (iddah) pertain to women.

Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A slave can give three divorces to a free woman, and a free man can give two divorces to a slave woman.

Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Divorce and 'iddah pertain to women.
