It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said on the day of Khaybar:Tomorrow I will give the flag to the person at whose hand Allah will grant victory. The companions spent the whole night thinking about who would receive the flag. In the morning, everyone came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), each hoping that he would be given the flag. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked:Where is Ali bin Abi Talib? It was said:His eyes are hurting. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent for him, applied his saliva to his eyes, and prayed for him, and he was completely cured. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave him the flag. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:Shall I fight them until they become like us?The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:Go calmly. When you reach their field, first invite them to Islam and make clear to them the right of Allah. If Allah guides even one man through you, it is better for you than red camels.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will give the flag to the person who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant victory at his hand." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "That day, I never desired leadership." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), gave the flag into his hand, and said: "Go, and do not look back." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went, then stopped and, without turning, asked: "O Messenger of Allah! On what things should I fight them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fight them until they testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. When they say this, their blood and wealth will be protected, except by the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man came to him and said: "O Abu Muhammad! Shall I not tell you what we do in our battles?" He said: "Do not tell." The man said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stay in any town, he would invite the people of that town to Islam. If they accepted, he would include them among himself and his companions. If they refused, he would invite them to pay jizyah. If they paid jizyah, he would accept it. If they refused, he would declare war on equal terms. And even if the least of his companions made a covenant with anyone, all of them would fulfill it together."
