Muslimah bin Abdul Malik asked Salim bin Abdullah, may Allah have mercy on him: "If stolen property from the spoils is found with someone, what should be done?" Salim said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever you catch in treachery, beat him and burn his belongings." Then, if there is a Qur'an among his belongings, sell it and give its price in charity.

Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Whoever commits treachery with war booty, his belongings should be burned."

A man named Ziyad stole wool from the spoils of war, so Abu Sa'id bin Abdul Malik gathered all his possessions and burned them, and Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) was also present, but he did not object.
