Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Permissibility of reciting more in Maghrib prayer based on the congregation’s preference
Hadith Number: 1836
اخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد بن سلم ، قال: حدثنا حرملة بن يحيى ، قال: حدثنا ابن وهب ، قال: اخبرني عمرو بن الحارث ، عن محمد بن عبد الرحمن ،، انه سمع عروة بن الزبير يحدث، عن زيد بن ثابت ، انه سمع مروان يقرا ب قل هو الله احد، و إنا اعطيناك الكوثر، فقال زيد: فحلفت بالله،" لقد رايت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقرا فيها باطول الطويلتين المص سورة الاعراف آية 1" .
Urwah bin Zubair narrates regarding Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he heard Marwan reciting Surah Ikhlas and Surah Kawthar, Sayyiduna Zaid said: I swear by the name of Allah that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the longer of the two long surahs in this prayer, that is, he used to recite Alif Lam Meem Saad (i.e., Surah Al-A'raf).
