Section on the funeral prayer – Permissibility of increasing the number of takbirs in the funeral prayer
Hadith Number: 3069
اخبرنا احمد بن علي بن المثنى ، قال: حدثنا علي بن المثنى ، قال: حدثنا علي بن الجعد ، قال: اخبرنا شعبة ، عن عمرو بن مرة ، قال: سمعت ابن ابي ليلى ، قال: كان زيد بن ارقم ، يكبر على جنائزنا اربعا، ثم يكبر خمسا، فسالناه عن ذلك، فقال:" كبرها، او كبرهن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم" .
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila reports: Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say four takbirs in our funeral (prayers), then he started saying five takbirs. We asked him about this, so he informed us: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did this (i.e., the fifth takbir)—the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words—that he (the Prophet) also said (five takbirs).
