Chapter on Voluntary Fasting - Clarifying that fasting Ashura is optional after Ramadan
Hadith Number: 3622
اخبرنا محمد بن الحسن بن الخليل ، حدثنا عبد الله بن معاوية ، قال: حدثنا حماد بن سلمة ، عن عبيد الله بن عمر ، عن نافع ، عن ابن عمر ، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال في صوم يوم عاشوراء بعدما نزل صوم رمضان:" من شاء صامه، ومن شاء افطره" .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding fasting on the day of Ashura, this was after the command of fasting in Ramadan was revealed: "Whoever wishes may fast on this day, and whoever wishes may leave it."

اخبرنا الفضل بن الحباب ، قال: حدثنا ابو الوليد الطيالسي ، حدثنا ليث بن سعد ، عن نافع ، عن ابن عمر ، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " يوم عاشوراء يوم كانت تصومه اهل الجاهلية، فمن احب منكم ان يصومه فليصمه، ومن كرهه فليدعه" .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The day of Ashura is such a day that in the days of ignorance people used to fast on it, so whoever among you wishes to fast on this day may do so, and whoever dislikes it may leave it."
