Chapter on Umm Walad – Clarification that Umar ibn al-Khattab forbade selling mothers of children
Hadith Number: 4324
اخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد الازدي ، قال: حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قال: اخبرنا النضر بن شميل ، قال: حدثنا حماد بن سلمة ، عن قيس بن سعد ، عن عطاء بن ابي رباح ، عن جابر بن عبد الله ، قال: " كنا نبيع امهات الاولاد على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وابي بكر، فلما كان عمر نهى عن بيعهن" .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), we used to sell Umm Walad slave women. When the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he forbade selling them.
