Chapter on Names and Nicknames – The reason the Prophet changed this type of name
Hadith Number: 5830
اخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد الازدي ، قال: حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قال: اخبرنا النضر بن شميل ، قال: حدثنا شعبة ، قال: اخبرنا عطاء بن ابي ميمونة ، قال: سمعت ابا رافع ، يحدث، عن ابي هريرة ، قال: " كان اسم زينب برة، فقالوا: تزكي نفسها، فسماها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم زينب" .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The name of Sayyidah Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) was previously Barrah. People said: You declare yourself to be pious, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) named her Zainab.
