Haritha says that I went to visit Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness. He had cauterized his body. When he saw me, he said, "I do not think anyone has suffered as much pain as I have. During the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I could not get even a single dirham, and now, in one corner of my house, forty thousand dirhams are buried. If I had not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that none of you should wish for death, I would certainly have wished for it." Then a shroud was brought to him, and seeing it, he began to weep and said, "Even Hazrat Hamza did not get this much of a shroud. There was a simple sheet, which if placed over his head, his feet would be uncovered, and if placed over his feet, his head would be uncovered. So his head was covered with it, and idhkhir grass was placed over his feet."

It is narrated from Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we presented ourselves in the court of the Prophet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting at that time in the shade of the Ka'bah, reclining on his cloak. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for us and seek help for us." Upon hearing this, the color of the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red and he said, "For the people before you, pits were dug as a punishment for accepting the religion, and saws were placed on their heads and their heads were split open, but this did not turn them away from their religion. In the same way, iron combs were used to tear the flesh and muscles from behind their bones, but even this pain did not turn them away from their religion. And Allah will surely complete this religion, until a rider will travel between Sana'a and Hadramaut and will fear none but Allah, or the attack of a wolf on his sheep. But you people are hasty."

It is narrated from Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) waiting for him to come out for the Zuhr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said, "Listen to me." The companions replied, "We are present." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Listen to me." The companions again replied as before. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Soon some rulers will come over you. Do not help them in their oppression, and whoever affirms their lies will never be able to come to me at the Pond of Kawthar."

Hazrat Khabbab bin Al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I used to work with iron in Makkah Mukarramah and I was working for ‘As bin Wa’il. Once, a sum of dirhams became due to me from him. I came to him to demand them, so he said,“I will not pay your debt until you deny Muhammad.”I said,“I will never deny Muhammad, even if you die and are brought back to life.”He said,“When I am brought back to life, I will have wealth and children (then I will pay your debt).”I mentioned this incident to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so Allah revealed this verse:“Have you seen the one who disbelieves in Our verses and says, ‘I will surely be given wealth and children [in the Hereafter] ?’”

It is narrated from Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that we migrated with the Prophet (peace be upon him) solely for the pleasure of Allah, therefore our reward is with Allah. Now, some of us have departed from this world and did not partake of any of their reward. Among them was Hazrat Mus'ab bin Umair, who was martyred at the Battle of Uhud, and we could not find anything to shroud him with except a single sheet. If we covered his head, his feet would remain uncovered, and if we covered his feet, his head would remain uncovered. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to cover his head and place a type of grass called 'izkhir' on his feet. And among us are some people whose fruits have ripened and they are gathering them.

Abu Muammar says that we asked Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite (Qur'an) in the Zuhr prayer. He replied, "Yes."
Ziyad bin Dumrah narrated to Urwah bin Zubair from his father and grandfather, who participated in the Battle of Hunayn with the Prophet (peace be upon him), that the Prophet (peace be upon him) led us in the Zuhr prayer and sat under the shade of a tree. Aqra’ bin Habis and ‘Uyainah bin Hisn stood up and came to the Prophet (peace be upon him). At that time, ‘Uyainah was demanding the blood money for ‘Amir bin Ashja’i, who was the chief of the tribe of Qais, and Aqra’ bin Habis was defending Muhallim bin Jathamah because of Khindaf. Both of them began to argue in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him). We heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say:“Take fifty camels of the blood money from us during the journey, and take the other fifty when you return.”‘Uyainah replied,“No, by Allah, I will not accept the blood money until I inflict the same pain and grief on his women as was inflicted on my women.”Then voices were raised, a fierce dispute broke out, and there was much commotion. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,“O ‘Uyainah, will you not accept the blood money?”‘Uyainah replied in the same manner again, until a man from the tribe of Banu Laith, called Muqaytil, stood up. He was armed and had a sword and shield in his hand. He said,“O Messenger of Allah, I do not see any precedent for this act of the killer, i.e., Muhallim, in the early days of Islam, except as if some goats came to a spring to drink water, and someone killed the first goat, causing the last goat to flee. So, today you establish a precedent, and tomorrow you abolish it.”The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,“Let him pay fifty camels now, and fifty camels when we return to Madinah.”Thus, you had the blood money paid by that man, and this incident occurred during the journey. Muhallim was a tall man with wheat-colored skin, and he was sitting at the edge of the people. While the people were sitting, he made his way through them and sat in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Tears were flowing from his eyes, and he said,“O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a sin of which you have been informed. Now I repent to Allah. Please pray for my forgiveness.”The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,“Did you kill that man with your weapon in the early days of Islam? O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim.”The Prophet (peace be upon him) said this aloud three times. (The narrator) Abu Salamah added: Muhallim stood up after hearing this, wiping his tears with the edge of his cloak. Ibn Ishaq stated that Muhallim’s people said that later the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed for his forgiveness, but outwardly he maintained what he had said before, so that people would not take liberties with one another.
