Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying when he made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory. He (peace be upon him) was saying:“(Zakat al-Fitr) is obligatory as one sa’ of dates and one sa’ of barley.”Thus, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to give dates as Zakat al-Fitr.

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made obligatory the Sadaqat al-Fitr of one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley. Accordingly, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give one sa’ of dates as Sadaqat al-Fitr on behalf of every young and old member of his household and his slaves, except for one year when dates were not available, so he gave barley on loan and paid it. Then, when the era of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came, people started giving half a sa’ (two mudd) of wheat in place of one sa’ of barley.

Sayyiduna Qais bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that before the obligation of Zakat was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to give Sadaqat al-Fitr. Then, when the obligation of Zakat was revealed, he neither commanded us regarding Sadaqat al-Fitr nor forbade us, while we continue to give Sadaqat al-Fitr.

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made it obligatory to give one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley as charity of Ramadan on every man, woman, free person, and slave. Then people considered half a sa’ of wheat to be equivalent to it. The following statement is not present in the narration of Ahmad and Mu’ammal. However, in the narration of Ziyad bin Ayyub, the following addition is present: He says that Imam Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to give the charity of Fitr from dates, except for one year when dates became scarce, so he gave the charity of Fitr from barley.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No charity is obligatory upon a Muslim for his horse, slave, or slave-girl except for Sadaqat al-Fitr (charity of breaking the fast); (he will pay Sadaqat al-Fitr on behalf of his slave and slave-girl)." Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the narration of Janab Makhramah has been mentioned in another chapter besides this chapter.

And that the meaning of his, peace be upon him, saying in the report of Ibn Umar: "Upon the slave," its meaning is: "on behalf of the slave," not that it is obligatory upon the slave as claimed by those who say: "Slaves possess ownership."

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made obligatory the giving of one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley as Sadaqat al-Fitr on behalf of every free person, slave, man, and woman. And whenever Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would give Sadaqat al-Fitr, he would give it from dates, except for one year when dates were scarce, so he gave it from barley.
