Hadith Number: 1066

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me that Allah Almighty has forbidden you from swearing by your forefathers. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, "By Allah! After I heard this prohibition from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I never swore an oath, neither by anything other than Allah from myself nor by quoting it from someone else's tongue."

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was with a few horsemen. At that time, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was swearing by his father. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called out to him and said, "Be aware! Surely Allah the Pure forbids you from swearing by your forefathers. So if anyone must swear, let him swear by Allah, otherwise he should remain silent."

Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that my companions sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so that I could request riding animals for them from him. They wanted to participate with you in the army of hardship (i.e., the expedition of Tabuk). I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! My companions have sent me to you so that you may arrange riding animals for them." He said, "By Allah! I cannot provide you with riding animals." When I presented myself before you, you were angry, and I could not realize it. I returned very saddened by your refusal. I was also afraid that perhaps you had become displeased because of my request for riding animals. I went back to my companions and informed them of the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but not much time had passed when I heard the voice of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), who was calling out, "O Abdullah bin Qais!" I replied, and he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is calling you. I presented myself before you, and you said, "Take these two pairs and these two pairs of camels." You granted six camels. You had just bought these camels from Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) at that time and said, "Give them to your companions and tell them that Allah Almighty has given them to you," or you said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given them to you for your riding, so ride upon them." I took those camels to my companions and said to them, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has granted these for your riding, but by Allah! Now you will have to go to those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who heard the refusal of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), lest you think that I have told you something incorrect regarding the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." They said, "We have no doubt about your truthfulness, but if you insist, we will do so." Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) took some of them and went to those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who had heard that statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that at first the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had refused, but then he granted. Those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) also narrated the hadith in the same way as Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated from them.

Hazrat Zahdam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that we were present in the gathering of Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) (food was brought and) the mention of chicken came up. A man of red complexion from the“Bani Taimullah”was present there. He was probably from among the freed slaves. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) also invited him to eat. He said,“Once I saw a chicken eating filthy things, so I felt great aversion and swore that I would never eat chicken meat again.”Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“Come closer, (regarding your oath) I will narrate to you a hadith on this subject. Taking some people from the Ash’ari tribe with me, I went to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (for the expedition of Tabuk) and requested mounts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘By Allah! I cannot arrange mounts for you, because I do not have anything that could serve as your mount.’ Then some camels from the spoils of war were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he inquired about us and said, ‘Where are the people of the Ash’ari tribe?’ Thus, he ordered that five camels be given to us, which were healthy and fat. When we set out, we said among ourselves that the inappropriate way we had adopted would not bring any blessing in this gift from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So we again went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, ‘When we first requested you, you swore that you could not arrange mounts for us. Perhaps you have forgotten that oath.’ But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘I truly did not arrange mounts for you; it is Allah, the Exalted, who has given you these mounts. By Allah! You must believe that, insha’Allah, whenever I take an oath and then it becomes clear to me that something else is better and more appropriate, then I will do that which is better and will offer expiation for my oath.’

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Abdur Rahman bin Samurah! Never ask for a position of authority, because if it is given to you after you have asked for it, Allah the Exalted will withdraw His help from you. But if it is given to you without your asking, then you will be helped by Allah in it. And when you take an oath and then see something else better than it, then offer expiation for your oath and do that which is better.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Sulaiman bin Dawood (peace be upon them) said: "Tonight I will go to all one hundred of my wives (and as a result of this intimacy), each woman will give birth to a boy, so that one hundred boys will be born who will fight in the way of Allah." An angel said to him, "Say Insha'Allah (if Allah wills)," but he did not say it and forgot. So he went to all his wives, but none of them gave birth except one, and even she gave birth to only half a child. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he had said Insha'Allah, his wish would have been fulfilled and there would have been more hope for his desire to be realized."

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Sulaiman bin Dawood (peace be upon him) said, "Tonight I will go to my seventy wives, and each wife will give birth to a horseman who will fight in the way of Allah." His companion said, "InshaAllah (if Allah wills)," but he did not say it. Consequently, none of the wives gave birth except one, and even she gave birth to a child who was incomplete on one side. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that if Sulaiman (peace be upon him) had said "InshaAllah," (then children would have been born to all of them) and they would have fought in the way of Allah.

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! In the days of ignorance (disbelief), I had vowed to observe i'tikaf for one day. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered him to fulfill it. Ibn Umar narrated that among the captives of Hunayn, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) received two slave girls. So he kept them in a house in Makkah. He narrated that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed kindness to the captives of Hunayn (and set them all free without any compensation), so they began to run in the streets. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abdullah! See what is the matter. He was told that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had shown kindness to them (and all the captives of Hunayn had been set free without compensation).
