Hazrat Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that during the Battle of Khaybar, we suffered from repeated hunger. Finally, on the day Khaybar was conquered, we also received domestic donkeys (as spoils of war). So, we slaughtered them and began to cook them. When the pots began to boil, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proclaimed that the pots should be overturned and nothing from the meat of the domestic donkeys should be eaten. Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that some people said that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade it because the khums (one-fifth share) had not yet been taken from it, but some other companions said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had absolutely declared the meat of the donkey to be forbidden.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara and Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with them) that they were with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then they found some donkeys, so they cooked their meat, but the announcer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed: "Turn over the pots."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating the meat of donkeys because they are used for carrying loads, and he did not like that the animals used for carrying loads should become extinct, or whether he forbade only the meat of domesticated donkeys on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar.

Hazrat Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that a fire was being lit. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked,“For what purpose is this fire being lit?”The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied that it was for cooking the meat of donkeys. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,“Break the pots in which the donkey meat is being cooked and throw away the meat.”Upon this, the companions said,“Why don’t we just throw away the meat and wash the pots?”The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,“Then wash the pots.”

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that among the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), several companions including Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) were sitting at the dining spread. When people reached out their hands to eat the meat, one of the pure wives, Ummul Momineen Maimunah (may Allah be pleased with her), informed them that it was the meat of a lizard. Everyone refrained from eating. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Eat (he said "kulu" or "at'imu"), for it is lawful, or he said: There is no harm in eating this, but this animal is not my food.

Hadith Number: 1273
Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house of Umm al-Mu'mineen Hazrat Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) along with the Messenger of Allah. Umm al-Mu'mineen was the maternal aunt of both him and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). There was roasted lizard present there, which her sister Hafidah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) had brought from Najd. She presented that roasted lizard to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was very rare that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would extend his hand towards any food until he was informed about what kind of food it was, but that day he extended his hand towards the meat of the roasted lizard. Meanwhile, one of the women present there said, "Why don't you inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that what you have presented before him is lizard, O Messenger of Allah!" (Upon hearing this) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand from the lizard. Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Is lizard forbidden?" He replied, "No, but since it is not found in my land, my nature does not like it." Hazrat Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) stated, "Then I drew it towards myself and ate it. At that time, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was watching me."
