It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when revelation would descend upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a buzzing sound would be heard near him, like the sound of bees. Then we waited for a while and saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced the Qiblah, raised both hands, and made this supplication: O our Allah! Grant us more, do not decrease us; honor us, do not disgrace us; give to us and favor us, and do not favor others over us; and be pleased with us and make us pleased. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ten verses have been revealed to me; whoever adheres to them will enter Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited to us {قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ} until he completed the ten verses.

Abu Khalaf Ubaid bin Umair came with Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to the platform of Zamzam, as there was no other shade in the mosque at that time. Sayyida welcomed and greeted them and said: What prevents you from meeting us? Ubaid said: I fear that I might cause you weariness. Sayyida said: How have you come? Ubaid said: I have come to ask you about a verse—how the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite it. Sayyida said: Which verse is it? Sayyida said: Which of these recitations do you prefer more? Ubaid said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! One of these recitations is dearer to me than the world and all that is in it. Sayyida said: Which recitation is that? Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I bear witness that this verse was revealed in this way and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite it in this way, but there is also a recitation with the alphabetical letters.

Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! "And those who give what they give while their hearts tremble" (Surah Al-Mu’minun: 60). I said: (O Messenger of Allah!) Is the person meant by this verse the one who steals, commits adultery, and drinks alcohol, while at the same time fearing Allah Almighty? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, O daughter of As-Siddiq! By this verse is meant the person who performs prayers, fasts, and gives charity, but still fears that perhaps these deeds may not be accepted.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: {تَلْفَحُ وُجُوْہَہُمُ النَّارُ وَہُمْ فِیْہَا کٰلِحُوْنَ۔} … The explanation of "the fire will scorch their faces and they will be grimacing in it" is that the fire will roast them, the upper lip will shrink until it reaches the middle of the head, and the lower lip will hang down until it strikes the navel.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Muslim man sought permission from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as to whether he could marry a woman named Umm Mahzool. This woman was an adulteress and she had stipulated that he would spend on her. When this man sought permission to marry this woman or mentioned her before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {الزَّانِیَۃُ لَا یَنْکِحُہَا إِلَّا زَانٍ أَ وْ مُشْرِکٌ} … Only an adulterer or a polytheist man can marry an adulteress woman. Arim says: I asked Mu’tamir about Hadrami, he said: He was a storyteller and I had seen him.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from among the Ansar came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about this: if a man finds another man with his wife, should he kill him? Meanwhile, Allah Almighty revealed the verses in the Noble Qur’an regarding li’an (mutual cursing) about this matter, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The decision between you and your wife has been made. So both husband and wife performed li’an, while I (Sahl) was present there, then that man separated from the woman in the presence of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), while relating the incident of Ifk (the slander), she says: By Allah! It never occurred to me that revelation would be sent down concerning me. I considered myself too insignificant for Allah, the Exalted, to speak about me, and that His words would be recited. Yes, I did hope that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would see a dream about me, through which Allah would declare my innocence. By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet moved from his place, nor had any of the household gone outside, when Allah, the Exalted, sent down revelation upon His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Due to the heaviness of the revelation, sweat began to pour from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and even on a cold day, drops of sweat like pearls would fall from his forehead at the time of revelation, due to the weight of what was being revealed to him. When the state of revelation ended for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he was smiling. The first thing he said after the revelation was:“O Aisha! Rejoice, for Allah has declared your innocence.”Upon hearing this, my mother said:“Aisha! Stand up and thank the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”But I said:“I will not stand up to thank him; rather, I will praise my Allah, Who has sent down my innocence.”Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed this: {إِنَّ الَّذِینَ جَاءُوْا بِالْإِفْکِ عُصْبَۃٌ مِنْکُمْ} [النور: ۱۱] These were a total of ten verses. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to spend on Mistah because he was poor and also a relative. Mistah too had spoken about the slander concerning Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), so Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“By Allah! I will never spend on him again, for he has gone this far.”But Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse: {وَلَا یَاْتَلِ اُولُوا الْفَضْلِ مِنْکُمْ وَالسَّعَۃِ اَنْ یُّؤْتُوْٓا اُولِی الْقُرْبٰی وَالْمَسٰکِیْنَ وَالْمُہٰجِرِیْنَ فِیْ سَبِیْلِ اللّٰہِ وَلْیَعْفُوْا وَلْیَصْفَحُوْا اَلَا تُحِبُّوْنَ اَنْ یَّغْفِرَ اللّٰہُ لَکُمْ وَاللّٰہُ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِیْمٌ۔} …“And let not those among you who possess virtue and wealth swear not to give to their relatives, the needy, and those who have emigrated in the way of Allah. And let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”Upon hearing this verse, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“By Allah! I love that Allah should forgive me.”So he resumed the expenditure he used to give to Mistah and said,“Now I will never stop it.”Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyida Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) about my matter,“What do you know about this? Or what do you think? Or what has reached you?”She said:“O Messenger of Allah! I wish to protect my ears and eyes from this! By Allah, as far as I know, there is only good in Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).”Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: It was Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) alone among the Mothers of the Believers who used to compete with me, but Allah, the Exalted, protected her through piety from falling into this matter. And her sister, Sayyida Hamna bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), out of partisanship for her sister, became involved and was among those who were ruined. Ibn Shihab says: This is all we know about this group.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that among those who spread the accusation were mentioned the names of Hassaan bin Thabit, Mistah bin Uthatha, and Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with them). There were others involved as well, but I do not know them. In any case, it was a group, as Allah Almighty has used the word "Usbah" in these verses. The greatest share was that of Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salool. Urwah says that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to dislike that Sayyiduna Hassaan (may Allah be pleased with him) be spoken ill of in her presence, and she used to say that Hassaan (may Allah be pleased with him) is the one who said: "So indeed, my father and his father and my honor are a protection for the honor of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) from you."

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I was accused, while I had no knowledge of it, later the news reached me, but I could not believe it. One day, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was with me, and during that time, revelation began to descend upon him and a light sleep overcame him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and said: O Aisha! Rejoice. I said: With the praise of Allah, not with your praise. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):“Which sin is the greatest?”He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied:“That you associate a partner with Allah, while He created you.”The man asked:“After that, which sin is greater?”He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied:“That you kill your child out of fear that he will eat with you.”The man then asked:“After that, which sin is greater?”He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied:“That you commit adultery with your neighbor’s wife.”Thus, Allah Almighty revealed confirmation of these matters in His Book and said: {وَالَّذِیْنَ لَا یَدْعُوْنَ مَعَ اللّٰہِ اِلٰہًا اٰخَرَ وَلَا یَقْتُلُوْنَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِیْ حَرَّمَ اللّٰہُ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا یَزْنُوْنَ وَمَنْ یَّفْعَلْ ذٰلِکَ یَلْقَ اَثَامًا۔} (Surah Al-Furqan: 68)“And those who do not invoke any other god along with Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, nor commit adultery. And whoever does this shall meet a severe punishment.”
