Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He asked you (peace be upon him) about something that is found lying somewhere. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Keep the identification of its pouch and the thing tied at the mouth of that pouch, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes, then fine. Otherwise, you may use it. That man asked, "What is the ruling about a lost goat?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: It will either be found by you, or by one of your brothers, or a wolf will take it. That man asked, "What is the ruling about a lost camel?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What do you have to do with it? Its belly is with it, its legs are with it. It will reach water by itself and eat and drink from the trees, until its owner finds it. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The ruling of benefiting from a found lost item after announcing it for a year is in the case when a person believes in his heart that if the owner comes, he will return that item to its owner, and that person has kept the identification of its pouch and the thing tied at the mouth of the pouch.

Suwaid bin Ghaflah narrates: I set out with Zaid bin Suhan and Sulaiman bin Rabee’ah. On the way, I picked up a lost whip. Both of them said: Leave it. I said: By Allah, I will not leave it so that wild animals may eat it. I will benefit from it. I reached Madinah Munawwarah. I met Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: You did the right thing. I once found a pouch in which there were dinars. I took it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Announce it for one year. Then, when I found no one, I announced it for three years. Then I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Remember the string tied at the mouth of the pouch and the number of dinars in it. If someone comes and tells you about it, then hand it over to him. Otherwise, you may benefit from it.

Suwaid bin Ghaflah narrates: I set out with Sulaiman bin Rabee’ah and Zaid bin Suhan. At the place of ‘Adheeb, I found a whip and picked it up. Both of them said: Leave it. I said: I will not leave it so that wild animals may eat it. Then I presented myself before Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him about this incident. He said: You did the right thing. During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I found one hundred dinars lying (on the ground). I took them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Announce it. I announced it for a year. Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Announce it. I again announced it for a year. Then I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Announce it. I continued to announce it for a year. Then I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Remember its amount, its pouch, and the string tied at the mouth of the pouch. If someone comes later and informs you of its amount, the pouch, and the sign of the pouch’s string, then pay (that amount) to him. Otherwise, you may benefit from it. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),“You may benefit from it,”contains the hidden meaning that if even after three years its owner comes to him, the found item should be returned to him.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What do you have to do with it? Its belly is with it, its legs are with it. Leave it alone. It will eat the leaves of trees by itself and reach water, until its owner finds it. That man then asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about a lost goat. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Either you will find it, or your brother will find it, or a wolf will get it.
