It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself and his family would often spend several consecutive nights hungry, with no food for the night, and most of their bread was made of barley.

It was asked from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ever ate bread made from sifted flour, that is, fine flour (maida)? Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never even saw bread made from fine flour until he met Allah, the Exalted. Then Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Did you people not have sieves during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: We did not have sieves. Then it was asked: What did you do with the flour of barley? He replied: We used to blow into it, so whatever could fly away (the husk) would fly away, then we would knead that flour.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, never ate food on a table. Nor did he eat from small bowls, nor was fine flour bread (naan) ever made for him (the narrator of the hadith, Yunus, says about his teacher Qatadah): I asked Qatadah,“On what did he (the Prophet, peace be upon him) place the food to eat?”He replied: On a general dining cloth (dastarkhwan). Muhammad bin Bashar says that one of the narrators of this narration, Yunus, who narrates from Qatadah, is Yunus the shoemaker (Yunus al-Skaaf).

It is narrated from Masruq, he says: I presented myself in the service of Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She had food brought for me and said: Eat to your fill. Then, when I do not wish to stop myself from crying, I begin to weep. I asked: What is the reason for this? She replied: I remember that condition and time that passed over me when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world. By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never ate his fill of bread and meat twice in one day.
