مختصر صحيح بخاري
Mukhtasar Sahih Bukhari
Only what a person spends in Allah’s way is truly his wealth.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who among you is there who loves the wealth of his heir more than his own wealth?" All of them replied, "O Messenger of Allah! All of us love our own wealth more." So he (peace be upon him) said: "Your own wealth is only that which you spend (in the way of Allah) and send forward during your life, and whatever you leave behind after death, that belongs to your heirs."
How the Prophet and his companions lived and abstained from worldly life.
`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, sometimes due to hunger I would lie down on the ground with my stomach pressed against it, and sometimes I would tie a stone to my stomach. One day, I sat in the path of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions. First, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, so I asked him about a verse of the Qur'an (only) so that he would ask me (about my condition) and take me home and feed me, but he went away. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, so I said the same to him, but he also went away. Then Abu al-Qasim (Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by. When he saw me, he understood and smiled and said: "O Abu Hur!" I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Come with me." I went along with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the house, I asked permission to enter, and I was granted permission. I went inside. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw a bowl of milk and said: "Where did this come from?" The household said, "So-and-so person," or he said, "So-and-so woman has given it to you as a gift." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Abu Hur!" I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Call the people of Suffah." Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the people of Suffah were guests of the Muslims; they had no home, nor any wealth or possessions, nor any friend or acquaintance whose house they could stay at (they used to stay in the mosque). When any charity would come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not partake of it himself (because charity was forbidden for him and his family), but would give it to them. And if a gift came, he would keep some for himself and give some to them. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Go and call the people of Suffah," it was very hard on me. I said to myself, "How will this little milk suffice for the people of Suffah? I was more deserving of this milk; if I drank some, I would gain some strength. And when the people of Suffah come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) will order me to serve them the milk. When they start drinking, I do not expect that any milk will be left for me at the end. But what could I do? Obeying Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was absolutely necessary." So, reluctantly, I went to them and called them. They asked permission to enter, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted them permission. They came and sat in their places. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "O Abu Hur!" I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Serve them this milk." I began to give the bowl of milk to each one of them. When one finished drinking, he would return the bowl to me. I would give it to the next person, and he too would drink to his fill and return the bowl to me. (Then to the third person, and so on.) In this way, after all of them, the bowl reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). By that time, the people of Suffah had drunk to their fill. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took the bowl in his hand, looked at me, smiled, and said: "Now only you and I are left." I said, "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Sit down and drink the milk." I sat down and began to drink the milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Drink more." So I drank more. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept saying this until I said, "By the One Who sent you with the truth, now there is no more room in my stomach." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Alright, now give it to me." I gave it to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) praised Allah, said Bismillah, and drank the remaining milk. (This was also one of the miracles of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.)
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: "O Allah! Grant sustenance to the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that is sufficient for their needs."
Moderation and consistency in worship.
Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No one will be saved because of his deeds (rather, it will be by Allah's mercy)." The people asked, "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: "Not even me, unless Allah's mercy envelops me." And he said: "Act with moderation, seek closeness to Allah, and worship in the morning, evening, and a part of the night, and acting with moderation will lead you to your desired destination (i.e., Paradise)."
Narrated from Ummul Momineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Which deed is most beloved to Allah Almighty? He replied: "That deed which is done consistently, even if it is little."
Having both hope and fear of Allah.
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "When Allah created mercy, He created it in one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts with Himself and sent one part to the entire creation. So if the disbelievers knew all the mercy that is with Allah, they would never despair of Paradise (despite their disbelief, polytheism, etc.), and if the believers knew all the punishment that is with Allah, they would never feel safe from Hell (despite their faith, belief, and righteous deeds)."
Controlling the tongue and the Prophet’s saying:“Speak good or remain silent.”
Narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever guarantees me (the proper use of) what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee Paradise for him." (i.e., he never misuses these two in the rights of Allah or the rights of people.)
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A person may utter a word that pleases Allah, without giving it any importance, and because of that Allah raises his ranks. And (sometimes) a person may utter a word that angers Allah, and he does not consider it a major sin, yet because of that he falls into Hell."
Abstaining from sins.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "My example and the example of what Allah has sent me with is like that of a person who came to a people and said: I have seen with my own eyes that an enemy army is coming, and I am clearly warning you to save yourselves from it, save yourselves from it. A group accepted his word and left that place during the night, so they were saved. But another group did not accept his word; in the morning, the army arrived and destroyed them."
Hell is veiled by desires.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Hell is veiled with desires, and Paradise is veiled with things that the soul dislikes."
