Regarding“Water is only from water.”
‘Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Sa’id Khudri narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards the mosque of Quba on a Monday. When we reached the locality of Banu Salim, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the door of Sayyiduna ‘Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and called him. He came out dragging his lower garment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We have put him in a hurry. Sayyiduna ‘Itban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! If a person hastily separates from his wife and no semen is discharged, what is the ruling (i.e., is ghusl obligatory or not)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The use of water is due to the emission of water (i.e., ghusl becomes obligatory only when semen is discharged).
Obligation of ghusl (bath) by ejaculation abrogated; now by intercourse.
`Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a group of the Muhajirun and Ansar differed regarding this issue (the obligation of ghusl). The Ansar said that ghusl becomes obligatory only when semen spurts out and ejaculation occurs, while the Muhajirun said that ghusl becomes obligatory when a man has intercourse with a woman. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will satisfy you regarding this." I got up and went to the house of Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) and sought permission from her. When she granted permission, I said, "O Umm al-Mu'minin, I want to ask you something, but I feel shy." Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "Do not feel shy to ask about something which you could ask your real mother who gave birth to you. I am also your mother (because the wives of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, are the mothers of the believers)." I said, "From what does ghusl become obligatory?" She said, "You have asked a knowledgeable person. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When a man sits between the four parts of a woman and the circumcised parts meet (i.e., the penis enters the vagina), then ghusl becomes obligatory.'"
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), and she narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "If a man has intercourse with his wife but is unable to ejaculate, is ghusl (ritual bath) obligatory on both of them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "I and she (meaning Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) do this, and then we perform ghusl."
If a woman sees in sleep what a man sees, she must bathe.
It is narrated from Ishaq bin Abi Talha that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her)—and she was the grandmother of the narrator of the hadith, Ishaq bin Abi Talha—came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) was also sitting there. She (Umm Sulaym) said,“O Messenger of Allah! If a woman sees in her sleep what a man sees (i.e., experiences a discharge of semen), what is the ruling?”Upon hearing this, Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said,“O Umm Sulaym! You have disgraced women (because only a very lustful woman would have a wet dream and discharge semen). May dust be upon your hands!”(And she said this as a good thing.) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“O Aisha! May dust be upon your hands,”and he said to Umm Sulaym,“O Umm Sulaym! When a woman sees such a thing, then in that case she should perform ghusl (ritual bath).”
Method of ghusl after sexual impurity.
Umm al-Mu’minin Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) says, "I placed water for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform ghusl after janabah. He first washed both hands two or three times, then put his hand into the vessel and poured water over his private part and washed it with his left hand. Then he rubbed his left hand forcefully on the ground to clean it, then performed wudu as he would for prayer, then poured three handfuls of water over his head, then washed his entire body, then moved from that place and washed his feet. Then I brought a cloth (towel) for him to wipe his body, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not take it."
How much water suffices for ghusl after janabah.
Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman (the foster nephew of Sayyidah Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) says: I and the foster brother of Ummul Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (Abdullah bin Yazid) went to her and asked about the ritual bath (ghusl) of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, after sexual impurity. She called for a vessel that could hold a sa’ (a measure) of water, and she performed ghusl behind a curtain between us and herself, and she poured water over her head three times. Abu Salamah said that the wives of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to cut their hair and keep it up to their ears. (The pure wives did this after the passing of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to abandon adornment, because hair is an adornment for women.)
Covering oneself with a cloth while bathing.
Narrated from Sayyida Umm Hani bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her) that in the year Makkah was conquered, she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the higher part of Makkah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to take a bath, so Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) screened him with a cloth. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrapped himself in his garment and then prayed eight units (rak‘ahs) of the forenoon (Duha) prayer.
Bathing alone and covering oneself.
Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The people of Bani Israel used to bathe naked and would look at each other's private parts. But Musa (peace be upon him) used to bathe alone. The people said that Musa (peace be upon him) does not bathe with us because he suffers from a hernia (i.e., swollen testicles). Once, Musa (peace be upon him) went to bathe and placed his clothes on a stone. The stone (by Allah's command) ran away with his clothes. Musa (peace be upon him) chased after it, saying, "O stone, give me my clothes! O stone, give me my clothes!" until the people of Bani Israel saw his private parts and said, "By Allah! He has no disease." At that moment, the stone stopped, and he was seen thoroughly. Then he picked up his clothes and (in anger) began to strike the stone. Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! There are marks of six or seven blows of Musa (peace be upon him) on that stone.
Prohibition of looking at private parts of men or women.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: A man should not look at the 'awrah (private parts that must be covered) of another man, nor should a woman look at the 'awrah of another woman. And a man should not lie with another man under a single garment, nor should a woman lie with another woman under a single garment.
Covering private parts; one should not be seen naked.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was carrying stones with the people for the construction of the Ka'bah, and he (peace be upon him) was wearing an izar (waist cloth). Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who was his (peace be upon him) uncle, said, "O my nephew! If you take off your izar and put it on your shoulder, it will be better." He (peace be upon him) took off his izar and put it on his shoulder, and immediately he fainted and fell down. After that day, he (peace be upon him) was never seen naked.
