What to say in the sermon
Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Dhamad (this is the name of a person) came to Makkah and he was from the tribe of Azd Shanwah, and he used to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing) for those afflicted by jinn and evil spirits. He heard from the ignorant people of Makkah that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (God forbid) is possessed. So he said, "I will see this person, perhaps Allah will cure him at my hands." Thus, he met the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I perform ruqyah for the effects of jinn and such, and Allah grants healing to whom He wills at my hands. Do you wish for this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied, "All praise is due to Allah, I praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. Now, after the praise, say what you wish." Dhamad said, "Recite these words again." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited these words three times. Then Dhamad said, "I have heard the words of soothsayers, I have heard the sayings of magicians, I have heard the poetry of poets, but I have never heard anything equal to these words, and these have reached the depths of eloquence." Then Dhamad said, "Give me your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to Islam." So he pledged allegiance. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Shall I take the pledge from you on behalf of your people as well?" He replied, "Yes, I pledge allegiance on behalf of my people as well." (The narrator says) Eventually, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a military detachment, and they passed by the people of Dhamad. The leader of that army said, "Have you taken anything from this tribe?" Then a man said, "Yes, I have taken a water vessel from them." He ordered, "Go and return it, for this is the tribe of Dhamad (and they are under protection due to Dhamad's pledge)."
Raising the voice in sermon and what the preacher should say
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him):
When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon, his eyes would become red, his voice would rise, and his anger would increase, as if he were warning of an approaching army, saying, "The enemy is coming in the morning or in the evening." And he would say: "I and the Hour have been sent like these two," and he would join his index and middle fingers together. After praising and glorifying Allah, he would say: "Know that the best speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The worst of affairs are newly invented matters, and every innovation in worship is misguidance." Then he would say: "I am closer to every believer than his own self. So if a believer dies and leaves behind wealth, it is for his family. But if he leaves behind debt or children, their care is my responsibility and their expenses are upon me."

Shortening the sermon
Sayyiduna Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us, and it was very brief and extremely eloquent. Then when he descended from the pulpit, we said, "O Abu al-Yaqzan! You delivered a very eloquent and extremely brief sermon. If you had made this sermon a bit longer, it would have been better." Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: A man's prolonging of the prayer and shortening of the sermon is a sign of his understanding, so make the prayer long and the sermon short. And some speech is (as effective as) magic (i.e., it has an effect)."
What must not be omitted in the sermon
It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man delivered a sermon before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said:“Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has found the right path, and whoever disobeys both of them has gone astray.”So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“What a bad speaker you are. Rather, say: ‘Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has gone astray.’”
Reciting Quran on the pulpit during sermon
Sayyida Umm Hisham bint Haritha bin Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with her) says: For two years, or a year and some months, our oven and the oven of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were the same. And I memorized Surah "Qaf" from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because he used to recite it on the pulpit while delivering the sermon on Fridays.
Pointing with the finger during sermon
It is narrated from Husain that ‘Amarah bin Ru’aybah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Bishr, the son of Marwan, on the pulpit raising both his hands (to gesture during the sermon). So he said,“May Allah ruin these two hands! I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do no more than this,”and he gestured with his index finger.
Explanation of Allah’s saying:“When they see trade or amusement...”
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to deliver the sermon standing on the day of Jumu'ah. So once, a caravan came from Syria (bringing grain), and people rushed towards it, leaving only twelve men with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Upon this, the verse was revealed which is in Surah Al-Jumu'ah: "When they see a trade or amusement, they rush towards it and leave you standing..." the entire verse.
What to recite in Friday prayer
Narrated by Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite "Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High" (Surah Al-A'la) and "Has there come to you the narration of the Overwhelming?" (Surah Al-Ghashiyah) in the Eid and Friday prayers. And when Friday and Eid would fall on the same day, he would still recite these two Surahs in both prayers.
Teaching knowledge in the sermon
‘Sayyiduna Abu Rifa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering a sermon. He says: I submitted,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! A poor (traveler) man has come to ask about his religion and does not know what his religion is.”Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me, left his sermon, and came to me. A chair was brought, and I think its legs were made of iron. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it (it is understood that sitting on a chair is not prohibited) and began to teach me what Allah had taught him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and completed his sermon. (This was the perfection of his character, and it is understood that a necessary matter is permissible during the sermon.)
Sitting between the two Friday sermons
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would deliver the sermon standing. Then he would sit down, then stand up and deliver it standing. And whoever among you says that he used to deliver it sitting, by Allah, he has lied. And by Allah, I have offered more than two thousand prayers with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
