Encouragement to make a will for those with something to bequeath.
Salim narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "It is not befitting for a Muslim who has something to bequeath, that he should spend three nights without having his will written with him." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Since I heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), not a single night has passed for me without my will being with me."

Do not bequeath more than one-third.
The conqueror of Persia, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me during the Farewell Pilgrimage when I was suffering from such pain that I was close to death. I said,“O Messenger of Allah! You know the pain I am experiencing, and I am a wealthy man, and I have no heir except one daughter. Should I give away two-thirds of my wealth in charity?”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“No.”I said,“Half?”He said,“No.”He said,“Give away one-third, and one-third is much.”If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. And whatever you spend for the pleasure of Allah, you will be rewarded for it, even for the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth. I said,“O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind by my companions?”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“If you are left behind (i.e., remain alive) and do such deeds by which Allah’s pleasure is sought, your rank will be elevated and raised. And perhaps you will remain alive so that some people will benefit from you and some will be harmed.”O Allah! Complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels, but poor Sa’d bin Khawlah! The narrator said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah.

`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I wish people would make bequests of less than a third, a quarter, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted concession for a third and said that a third is also much (too much).

Prophet’s will to act on the Book of Allah.
Talhah bin Musarrif says: I asked Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) make a will (regarding wealth or anything else)?" He said, "No." Then I asked, "Then why was making a will made obligatory upon Muslims? Or why were they commanded to make a will?" He said, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a will to act upon the Book of Allah, the Exalted."

Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not leave behind any dirham or dinar, nor sheep or camel, nor did he make any bequest regarding any wealth.

Aswad bin Yazid says that people mentioned to Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the executor (wasi) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So she said, "When did he (peace and blessings be upon him) make him the executor? I was holding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to my chest, or he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in my lap, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a basin, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell into my lap, and I did not realize that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away. So at what time did he make a will (to Ali)?"

Prophet’s will: Expel polytheists from Arabia and treat envoys well.
Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Jubair says that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: "Thursday, what is Thursday?" Then he wept until the pebbles became wet with his tears. I said, "O Ibn Abbas! What is the matter with Thursday?" He said: "When the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intensified, he said, 'Bring me (inkpot and tablet) so that I may write something for you, after which you will never go astray.' (Upon hearing this) people began to argue (about the paper and pen), and there should be no arguing in the presence of the Prophet. They said, 'What is the condition of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Can idle talk be uttered by him as well?' Then understand, understand well from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, 'Go away from me, for what I am engaged in is better than what you are engaged in (argument and disagreement).' I advise you of three things: One is that you expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula. The second is that you treat the delegations that come as I used to treat them (so that other nations may be pleased and inclined towards Islam). And the third thing, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not mention, or Sa'id said: I forgot."

Prohibition of taking back charity.
Amir al-Mu'minin Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I gave a fine horse in the way of Allah, and the one to whom I gave it ruined it. I thought that now he would sell it for a low price. I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: Do not buy it, and do not take back your charity. For the one who takes back his charity is like a dog who vomits and then eats it again.

Giving a gift to one child over others.
Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that my father (may Allah be pleased with him) gave me some of his wealth as a gift. My mother, Amrah bint Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with her), said that I will only be pleased with this (gift of wealth) if you make the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) a witness to it. My father, Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to make him a witness over this wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "Have you given the same (wealth) to all your children?" He replied, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Fear Allah and be just among your children." Then my father returned and took back that gift. (Hibah means gift.)
