Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Saying“Bismillah”before eating.
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when we used to eat with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would not put our hands (in the food) until he started and put his hand (first). Once, we were present with him at a meal when a girl came running as if someone was driving her, and she tried to put her hand in the food, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) caught her hand. Then a Bedouin came running, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) caught his hand as well. Then he said: "The Shaytan gains power over food on which the name of Allah is not mentioned, and he brought this girl to gain power over this food, so I caught her hand. Then he brought this Bedouin for the same purpose, so I caught his hand too. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, Shaytan's hand is with their hands in my hand." And in another narration, it is mentioned that then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said "Bismillah" and began to eat.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: When a person enters his house, and at the time of entering and eating food he mentions the name of Allah, then Satan (says to his companions and followers): "There is neither a place for you to stay here, nor food." But when he does not mention the name of Allah upon entering the house, Satan says: "You have found a place to stay." And when he does not mention the name of Allah at the time of eating as well, Satan says: "You have found both a place to stay and food."
Eating with the right hand.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, for indeed Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.
Sayyiduna Iyas bin Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: A man ate with his left hand in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Eat with your right hand.”He replied,“I cannot.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“May you not be able to.”He had said this out of arrogance. The narrator says that he was never able to raise that hand to his mouth for the rest of his life.
Eat from what is in front of you.
Sayyiduna Umar bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was in the lap of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (because the Prophet (peace be upon him) had married Umar's mother, Umm al-Mu'mineen Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)), and my hand was moving all around in the bowl. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near to you.
Eat with three fingers.
Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to eat with three fingers and would lick them before wiping his hand.
Lick your hand or have someone else lick it after eating.
Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When any of you eats food, he should not wipe his hand until he has licked it himself or has had it licked by someone else.
Licking fingers and the vessel.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the fingers and the vessel be licked (cleaned), and said: "You do not know in which morsel or part of the food the blessing is."
If a morsel falls, clean it and eat it.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "Satan is present with each one of you at every action he does, even when he is eating. If any of you drops a morsel, he should clean off any dirt and eat it, and not leave it for Satan. When he finishes eating, he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in which part of the food the blessing lies."
Saying“Alhamdulillah”after eating and drinking.
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty is pleased with His servant when he eats and says (Alhamdulillah) or drinks and says (Alhamdulillah) (i.e., after eating at morning, evening, or any other time).
