How long the Prophet stayed in Makkah and Madinah.
`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for thirteen years during which revelation would come to him, and he stayed in Madinah for ten years. And he passed away at the age of sixty-three years.

`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to hear the voice (of angels) in Makkah for fifteen years and see the light (of angels or Allah’s verses) for seven years, but did not see any form. Then for eight years, revelation used to come, and he stayed in Madinah for ten years. (This narration is rare.)

‘Ammar, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both),“How old was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he passed away?”He said,“I did not think that you, being from his people, would not know this.”I said,“I asked people, but they differed in this matter, so I thought it better to hear your statement about it.”Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said,“Do you know how to calculate?”I said,“Yes.”He said,“Remember forty years, for at that age he (peace and blessings be upon him) became a Prophet. Now add fifteen, for the time he (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah, sometimes in safety and sometimes in fear. Now add ten more, which passed after the migration to Madinah (so altogether it becomes sixty-five years). And before this, the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) has passed that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away at the age of sixty years. (See Hadith: 1556).”

When Allah shows mercy to a nation, He takes its Prophet before its people.
Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, when Allah the Exalted shows mercy to a nation, He causes its prophet to pass away before the destruction of that nation, and the prophet becomes a forerunner for his nation. And when He wills the destruction of a nation, He destroys it before the prophet, and by their destruction, He cools the eyes of the prophet, because that nation denies him and disobeys his commands.

About Allah's saying: "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge..."
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him):
A man from the Ansar had a dispute with Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the cousin of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through his paternal aunt, before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the water at Harrah (Harrah refers to land with black stones), from which they used to water the date-palm trees. The Ansari said, "Let the water flow so that it reaches (my land)." Sayyiduna Zubair refused. Eventually, they both brought their dispute before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Zubair, "O Zubair! Water (your trees) first, then let the water flow to your neighbor." Upon hearing this, the Ansari became angry and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Zubair is your cousin through your aunt (that is why you have favored him)." Upon hearing this, the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed color, and he said, "O Zubair! Water (your trees) and then withhold the water until it reaches the embankments." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, I think this verse was revealed about this matter: 'But no, by your Lord, they will not (truly) believe until they make you judge in their disputes, then find in themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in (full, willing) submission.' ((Complete verse: ... la yu’minuna hatta yuhakkimuka ...))"

Following the Prophet and Allah's saying: "Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble."
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard something from his companions (which was bad), so he delivered a sermon and said: Paradise and Hell were brought before me, and I have never seen such goodness and such evil as I have seen today (meaning the blessings in Paradise and the punishment in Hell). If you knew what I know, you would surely laugh little and weep much. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that no day was harder on the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) than that day. They covered their heads and the sound of weeping began to come from them. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as our Prophet. A man stood up and said: Who was my father? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Your father was so-and-so (and mentioned his name). Then this verse was revealed: "O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble."

`Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The greatest sin among the Muslims is that of the Muslim who asked about something which was not forbidden to the Muslims, but due to his questioning, it became forbidden.

Refraining from what the Prophet forbade and not opposing him.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), he states that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whatever I forbid you from, abstain from it, and whatever I command you to do, do it to the best of your ability. Indeed, those before you were only destroyed because of their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets."
